Apparently, someone is going to be making a live-action Robotech movie based on the '80's cartoon series. I am all for it but I wonder if they are going to go through the entire series, Macross, Southern Cross, Invid, Sentinels or just make one trilogy. I am looking forward to seeing the movie. I wonder how the Zentraedi will look?

I love my son and daughter. The avatar is of me and my daughter when she was very young. I miss her to death!

Honestly the Macross part is the only one that was any good. Everything after that was just downhill slip-shot editing to create something that could be syndicated.

Hearing this makes me imagine the worst of the over-CGI and explosions of Transformers with the complete lack of translating any ideas or thought that went into Americanization of other series like Ghost in the Shell.

In other words it sounds like a total train wreck.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

Someone's been going to make a live action Robotech movie for over a decade with no actual movie in sight. Now it's Sony and before it was WB iirc with Toby McGuire trying to act/produce. Let's just say believe it when you actually see it (or at a minimum hear that it's actually starting filming at least).

For those hoping that it'll be an accurate representation of early 80's cartoons, HG has (to their credit surprisingly) been letting fans know not to expect that (i.e. veritechs that look anything like an F-14 for instance). The sequel potential for this is bad though given that HG is losing their rights to Macross in 2021 iirc according to their recent arbitration that was made public. That doesn't leave much time in between and that recent (public) development might cool off the tiny bit of enthusiasm Sony has unless they can guarantee a renewal.

How many animes have translated to good films? That should set your enthusiasm levels right there.

You forgot to put Fist of the North Star on that list.

I will believe it when I see it.

Besides Macross, I like Mospeada as well. Sentinels had a cool concept but utterly failed to deliver. Southern Cross just sucked.

Well...to be fair, they only completed a few episodes of Sentinels, which were then cut down into that movie. We never really saw where that was going to go.

I'm not sure that I see a blockbuster-level audience for Robotech. It's been too long since the original material...kids don't have any awareness or interest. Sure, maybe you pull in some adults on the nostalgia factor, but a segment of those (the most diehard fans, who should really be supporting the effort most) will likely respond with wails of 'ruining my childhood!' to every necessary change they make in the adaptation.

Just the Macross story has what, 12 hours of material? Good luck paring that down in a satisfying way.

Honestly there's at about 11 hours of entirely extraneous stuff in Macross. Trim it down to guy stumbles in to program to re-activate crashed alien ship, zentradi attack, two or three set pieces, transform, big explosion, credits.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Look up "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?" to see what it looks like to compress the story to one movie's worth.

Though, to be fair, there's a moment with Minmei that I think EVERY Robotech fan will cheer for in that movie.

The moment she gets exploderated?

In large gory gobbets?

I'd pay to see that.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

There was a complete novelization ages ago (late 80s?). It wasn't good.

Some adults. It wasn't the mostly widely spread thing in the first place, even in its heyday. I actually caught a few episodes on TV when it originally aired, and even found a couple of the toys in a bargain bin somewhere when I was... 7 or 8. None of my friends at the time had any awareness that it even existed, except the crazy kid across the street. i found and read the entire novel line, which where most of my knowledge comes from.

I agree though, there's too much. Even paring it down lots, you've still got to establish the characters, get the ship misplaced by hyperjump, deal with training the protagonist, the basics of the infiltration, the fight with Miriya, more infiltration, the trapped on the enemy ship sequence, the return to earth (death of the mentor), and somehow work in saving the world through song, love and actually making the beast with two backs across species and genders. Mars is skippable (though you'd also probably actually need to cut the romantic pairing entirely, leaving the alternative...) and while skipping the beauty pagent would be a sign of the existence of a merciful god, it would positively derail the plot, since it's the hallmark event that prompts the infiltration and leads ultimately to the resolution.

@Just Tony- she canonically ends the original series in an abusive marriage to her cousin the straw man 'pacifist.' I know the fans love to hate her, but after that, the Sentinels thing just seems gratuitous.

I wasn't talking about Sentinels. At the end of SDF Macross: Do You Remember Love? Hikaru emplores Minmei to sing to defeat the Zentraedi forces. She refuses, begging Hikaru to run away from the war and be with her. He stoically reaches out and slaps her. THEN she sings to disrupt the Zentraedi army.

Eh? I thought that happened in Robotech as well. Though maybe he just tells her off for being shallow in the face of annihilation.

But the main character smacking a 16 year old girl isn't exactly a cheer moment.

It's Minmei, it's a perfectly acceptable solution to the problem. The only thing that would of made me happier is if when Hikaru rescued her he had a psychic moment where he saw all of the Macross Saga play out ( or Do you remember love aka Clash of the Bionoids) and decided to push her out of a airlock and save EVERYONE on the SDF-1 from Her....

I like that ending...to bad it wasn't like Zeta Gundam where someone condensed all the bitch slap scenes and it turned out to be like 5+ mins of solid bitch slaps. Damn you crazy Japan in the 80's.

Live-action Robotech has been “in production” for years and years.

Save yourself the hassle of waiting for what would be a terrible movie anyway and just watch the Macross Saga instead.

She isn't portrayed as that young in "Do You Remember Love?", or else I'd agree with you.

Waiting for a Robotech movie is like waiting for Palladium to release Robotech RPG Tactics Wave 2.
