NOTE: The most recent version will always be attached to this first post to make it easier to find.

I've worked on this project before, but finally got a chance to update it for 8th edition. It's a campaign supplement where players run both a Kill Team using the Shadow Wars ruleset and a normal 40k game. I'm currently in Afghanistan, so I won't have a chance to play it for some time, but if anyone wants to be a hero, I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who runs it. Balance, clarity, etc.

It's intentionally more general than my previous efforts, which were set in a specific sector that I had created for the original version of this campaign. I figured with this, I could give some guidance and let players determine their setting based on their campaigns and armies. I tried to tighten it up, going from well over 50 pages for my original idea to 24 for this one. It's still could probably use some fat cut, but I did the best I could with it. I'm proud of this one and hope that people enjoy it.

Bottom Line Up Front: I've developed a campaign system that combines Shadow War: Armageddon and Warhammer 40,000. I'd like comments, criticism and feedback due to being unable to playtest it currently. I've attached the PDF. A brisk description of the rules is included below so you can quickly gauge how interested you are in the concept.

Games have a GM who creates random events throughout the matches. Players have a kill team and a 40k army. The kill team runs in accordance with the Shadow War: Armageddon rules and provides buffs for your 40k army. Your 40k army is 1500 points and you have special formations similar to SW:A's special operatives. The player's warlord and units level up similar to SW:A. There are rules for generating relic weapons.

The first time I played the Heralds of Ruin Kill Team campaign, I loved the leveling aspect of the game. The fact that your Kill Team gained and lost members, experience, look, territory and so on. It brought a level of attachment to my army that I think 40,000 can lack sometimes. So a few years ago I developed a campaign system to try and inject all those things into Warhammer 40k. Since it was my first time writing rules, it was an over complicated disaster. Each player controlled three armies and a single kill team, used a complicated system of maps and rules to capture territory across several planets. There was far more book keeping than dice rolling and it was a real problem. Either way, we got just over 20 players to join in at the high water mark and it ran for something like two months, so it was still fun, but I always felt like we could have done better.

Reading it now...

Reserve rolls are not a thing in 8th, making Advanced Comms useless.

Power Field needs to specify how long it lasts-one phase? One turn? One save?

Overall, looks really cool!

Clocks for the clockmaker! Cogs for the cog throne!

I added a changelog and addressed the issues brought up by JNA Productions (appreciate the hand). There's always a possibility that I left some other 7th edition rules in there. Also, I'll be putting the most recent version in the first post to make it easier to find.

A question for anyone who's read through the rules: Should I use Shadow War: Armageddon or Heralds of Ruin for the Kill Teams?

Shadow War: Armageddon is an official GW product, so it has an air of legitimacy, but it's also a modified version of 7th edition rules, so it's really like learning two languages to play the campaign.

Heralds of Ruin is based on 8th edition and has a lot of player driven love behind it, but it tends to lack some of the balance and polish that an official product has.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I would not recommend Heralds of Ruin at the moment. While their balance has always been a bit off, 8th seems to really have thrown a wrench into their works. They straight up say that their morale system isn't good and that you should avoid using it if both sides have similar forces. This is far from the only problem and they seem slow to change and resistant to recommendations.

I just skimmed through the 8th edition Heralds of Ruin books and found some good and a lot of issues. The Legendary Weapons ruleset did a great job of illustrating exactly what I'm talking about, with weapons that would be easily too powerful on a 40k battlefield, let alone a Kill Team battle. I mean, a S3 Rapid Fire 5 weapon is already super powerful before adding in the two roll off special rules. Also, why Kill Team would require a S8 AP-4 Dmg D6 weapon is beyond me. Hypothetically, this weapon could be a pistol.

Also, looking back at the Shadow Wars: Armageddon books, I think it scales much more nicely, but since it's a modified version of 7th edition crossed with old Necromunda, there are a ton of odd new rules. Asking players to break out their Blast Templates and rolling a Suppressive Dice and all that seems like a pretty big ask.

I'm wondering if it's a good idea to try and redo Kill Team myself, sort of a one man effort to sort of realign the game to the correct scale. I mean, HOR Kill Team, as fun and cool as it is, can have up to 5 bikers, every army has access to Feel No Pain, I mean, it's everything sort of putting Fliers on the board.

As a note, I love the HoR Kill Team project, and I've had a blast playing those games, it just doesn't scale well with the project I have in mind. If anyone who works on those is reading this, let me say that your project is what inspired mine and I've played almost as many Kill Team games as I have 40k games. Keep up the good work, but consider scaling it back down.
