In the aftermath of the LVO many articles have been popping up about sportsmanship. I don't care what happened and I wasn't there. That isn't the point. The point is what can be in place that makes people happy.
Ultimately I feel reward is a better hand to be slapped with then punishment. To be clear though, there are obvious limits.

Major tournaments are now using digital aids like Apps. I think this could be used to helping a reward system that is easy to keep track of and can be used to keep integrity in check.

I feel that apps should have a sportsmanship section in it for each game. The section should have these sections
-Sportsmanship scoring
-Flagging
-Rewards

The sportsmanship scoring page should be limited to a few categories. It shouldn't be nitpicky that it turns people of and should cover the main topics
-Speed of play
-Good mannerisms and civil rule disputes
-great game
-best sportsman vote

You give your opponent a yes or no. The app records this and then gives you a reward, I think different rewards are good for fun. Rewards might be that was a great game, enjoy a turn where your warlord can make an extra attack or add one to the shots their gun fires once that game. They were civil? Congratz on your free single die reroll. Played quick? heres a free command point. Your app will show you got these rewards to veriy with your opponent. It won't show them until the next round so you can't immediately confront your opponent.

Then for the flagging section, it can only be viewed by judges and it does have a comment section to be more specific. If a player gets two flags of the same kind there are repercussions as outlined in the tournament package.
If a player is flagged 3 times for an offense or different offenses, then clearly it is not just a fluke and serious repercussions are in order. The opponent can't see it, their future opponents can't see it so there is no latching stigma.
It also is separate to the yes/no scoring so a no score isn't a flag. Reserve it for very bad experiences.

Then the great game section is just the quick tab to show your opponent your rewards you earned that game. I think the rewards should be small enough to be not pivotal to the game but enough to get people to want them.

finally the best sportsman vote section would be just who was your favorite opponent. It has a quick view-over that summarizes your opponent's sport stats from you, and then just choose one.

Simple, automated and I think it could be a good step. While not perfect, it is some ideas I had on the topic. I haven't run any major events, just one tournament of like 20+ peeps and been to mostly local tournaments but 3 times adepticon and some of the bigger canadian tournaments. I've had my share of bad players and there are a couple who's name I remember like 10 years on

Anyways, the real point of this is discussion so did I hit on any right points? wrong points?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I suppose if it's not clear, unless you received many flags, your score wouldn't be affected. Sportsman check list wouldn't give you points to your final score, but small rewards that wouldn't guarantee a win but maybe help at the turning point you needed it to.
That way its beneficial to be a good player, but can't be used negatively to reduce an opponent's overall score since a reroll and a command point won't win games alone
best sportsman would be a prize so there is that

and finally, this is for bigger tournaments, not small ones that are easier to individually monitor

If I recall right, sportsman scoring just counts towards Renaissance Man and Best Sportsman.

So not really a factor for best general. Something to think about.

that's good and I don't think sportsman score should count to general or even overall points. But I think a system in place
where being a good sport offered something so it was encouraged would help. It doesn't have to be big things and I don't want it to give players points since that has too easily come to mind for players to affect an opponent they don't like personally and their chances of doing well in the event. However small benefits that can just be a nice little boost here and there gives people something tangible to encourage just being a nice person. It would be harder to game the system in a negative light. I mean it would be easier to think if I don't give my opponent's sportsman points they can' win the overall then it is to be like man if I dock my opponent a single reroll next game they didn't have before anyways, they are certainly going to lose

I am just wondering with the technology they have in place and the issues of sportsmanship, what can they do to make sportsmanship and overall their events a better experience

If a guy or group of guys don't mind being the rule villains, there's nothing that can be done. Additionally, cheating isn't recognized or defined so that is another issue imo.

Intentional cheating is its own bag of worms and one that warrants a judges intervention. My idea for sure couldn't handle an opponent cheating though you could flag them for a later match-up, I think in that situation is the time to call a judge over

sticking to rules in a tournament setting as long as they are proper is another thing. Being a douche wouldn;t be something to flag a player but if you didn't enjoy the game then they wouldn'tt get the benefit for being a good player

your mind

What about the people who choose not to own smart phones?

Best off is to fold the sportsmanship scoring into the overall.
Allow best general and so on to go to any total pr!k with a platinum card, and elevate other prizes to be more important than simply winning.

Now, the motivational structure of the tournament as a whole will be changed, and people can begin to ignore the WAAC people who have contributed to the watering down of the hobby to an expensive CCG with 3d cards.

Once people begin to aim at best hobbyist or best sportsman, or most just or best army composition, then most points will no longer be highest aspiration - then you will see problems with pr!k!shness disappear.

This is true. Prioritize rewards for the behavior you want. If the best reward is the most cut throat WAAC victories then thats what will show up. If the best reward is for those who helped to create the best game experience then thats what you will get.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

It all comes down to weighting the points. As long as everything is weighted around blasting your opponent off the table that is what the focus of tournament players will focus on doing. Without changing that, nothing is going to change.

I like your nod to the different aspects of sportsmanship. Speed of play is important, did your game make it at least to the fifth turn? Yes, great! If not, the TO could easily inquire to discover if this was caused by one player or the other and if it had a negative impact on their opponents experience. Fluffy Green Tide armies are great, but if you can't play them fast enough to get through turn two in the time given for the round you shouldn't have brought them to the tournament.

I'm not so keen on the idea of giving you freebies to use in your next game for the tourney, but I would live a system for traditional soft scores that put some crunch into them. Hopefully with the right crunch you could entice those of the WAAC persuasion (even if just a little bit WAAC) to play a better, more personable and rewarding game for both players.

A ton of armies and a terrain habit...
