So another thread started talking about what people follow - be it comic authors, artists, companies etc.. So I figured starting up a separate thread focusing just exactly on what people do read and recommend

So lets hear it (mine in the spoiler below because it wound up rather long)
Spoiler:

Aliens Omnibus original series - Dark Horse - a 6 volume chock full of alien stories, generally runs from the end of the first film and forward with early stories tieing into it; whilst further on there are more stand alone stories. Great classic series and lots of fun if you're an Alien fan.
There's also a predator and pred VS alien series that I've not yet read into from the same era and release

The Black Moon Chronicles
- Europe Comics - older comic series set against a war torn world of dragons demons angels and more. An almost anti-hero lead character who joins up with raiders and goes on to wage epic war. Art style conveys the rank and file very well when it comes to the vast battles and sieges. It's nearly all published online, whilst there are print versions out there

Blacksad - Europe Comics - easist way to describe it would be a more gritty/real world zootopia (anthopomorphic animal people) set in the USA post war. A private dectetive setup spread over a series of cases in different books. Very mature writing and good art.

Chronicls of Conan - Dark Horse - classic sword and muscle action series. Stand alone adventures collected together in volumes that steady tell the epic saga of Conan. Many adapted from the original stories, others purely invented. There's also a few early appearances of Red Sonja here as well.

Chronicles of the Dragon Knights - Soleil in English - high quality modern artwork that tells the sale of the warrior women who hunt the world warping dragons that infest the world. Alongside they must deal with kings, lords and the politics of their age. Each book is basically a stand alone story, though together they steadily weave a long saga of the world changing through time and of shifts in politics and in the standing of the order of knights

Copperhead - Image - Space cowboy adventure; set in a backwater planet this still being written series makes a great blend of westen themes yet set in the far future with aliens and the occasional space ship.

Death Vigil - Image Top cow - great art and story as you follow a group of Death Knights hunting out the evil demons that infest the world. The story takes some great twists and turns and ends on a huge cliffhanger at the end of its first series - hoping that the writer can continue.

East of West - Image - still going this is a mad world. A dark future where the four horsemen have come to walk the earth as it approaches the apocolypse. With monsters, demons, machines, corrupt AI and more this is one of those stories that feels like its started part way through and toys with the reader as you learn more of the future and past. Solid artwork and great writing.

Elephantmen - Image - DNA blending in the 3rd world produces a race of superhuman warbeasts. This is the story set after the war as they attempt to intergrate into normal human society. Comic follows a selection of key characters through their attempts to settle into a world that doesn't really like them, whilst old enemies from the past keep trying to throw the world back into war. Great series and it finished (80 issues) only very recently.
Artwork is variable in style as different artists work on various parts, but overall is very well done.

Elves - Soleil in English (there's also Dwarves, Druids, Orks and I think a few others). Each "race" is instead a series of stand alone stories set in volumes about those races. The artwork is top quality and the stories are well written. There's a general link of the world advancing between the stories, but in general they are all separate stories.

Izuna - Humanoids - great art set in the eastern world mythology. It's your more classic nature/magic/myth vs the advance of humanity, greed and technology. Great art and writing. It also ties into Legend of the Scarlet Blades (legend is set before it)

Lady Mechanika = Benitez Productions - A high tech steam punk setting where we follow Lady Mechanica, a private detective with a mysterious past she can't remember chasing her history and also the twists and turns of the cases that appear. Some magic and myth in here too which makes for an exciting fast paced series of stories.

Legend of the Scarlet Blades - Humanoids - A bloddy quest by a Ronin seeking to recall his past and memories in a world full of myth and legend. Same author and artist as Izunas

The Metabarons - Humanoids - outstanding artwork set against an epic saga that reaches through the ages of a futuristic galactic empire and the mighty Metabarons - the superwarrior of their age. Writing is solid, though the story a little odd in places. There's a new series of this out as well that's slowly appearing (A few volumes out already)

Monstress - Iamge - a very dark story set in a mythical steam punk world. I've actually not read that far into this one as its one where the story is so strong that I've waited for more to come out before intending to binge read a huge chunk of story in one go. Great art style with a lot of detail.

Pathfinder - Dynamnite - probably one of the best things coming out of dynamite at present; this is Pathfinder, which is basically a different form of DnD style adventuring. So expect quests, spells, dragons and adventure!

Rat Queens - Image - This is DnD with a sassy group of gals as they quest to keep their pockets lined and their beer mugs full. Good solid fun with some serious plot lines here and there too. A bit of a sad note that the final issue of the first series appears to be lost (whilst the story is solid the background of this series has been a bit bumpy with some contention/issues between writers/artists going on). New season isn't "quite" as fun as the first, though I think its just finding its feet again.

Requiem Vampire Knight - Millsverse - still going this series has possibly some of the best and most detailed artwork of any comic I've read. The double page spreads are oozing in detail - this is one where if you're reading it online zooming in and around the scenes is great fun. Set in Hell follow a new death knight as he comes to terms with his new status in Hell; whilst Hells denizens themselves seek to manipulate and play out their own wars of interest. Bloody, dark and chock full of action.

Uber (and now Uber Invasion) by Avatar - It's WW2 and an alien message has brought a new age of weapons. Men and women with the power of gods do battle against the WW2 backdrop in the end-days of the War. The action is bloody and brutal. Story is very solid though follows the story itself rather than focusing on specific hero characters - characters will come and go (normally in death). Outstanding series

Yiu - Soleil in English - set in the future where religions are the power behind all as we follow Yiu, an assasin for hire in the religous wars as she fights to earn enough to cure her brother. The artwork is VERY Warhammer style - even through to the gothic weapons of war and setting. If you've any fondness of GW style art then this is one great visual experience.

Modern comics? I couldn't recommend a single one, I'm so out of the loop.

Old comics to chase down? Oh, yeah. TONS.

The Ultraverse imprint. There were several titles, and it takes some dedication once Loki and Black Knight get shoved into the continuity, but the gems of the earlier books are worth reading in and of themselves. I'd be in whole hog for a return to these characters, but apparently there are major issues at Marvel keeping it from happening.

JLA: Year One. DC did a bunch of comics that dove back into the Silver Age roots, reestablishing lore after the Zero Hour reboot/revamp, and this one stands head and shoulders above all of them. Tied for a close second, though, would be Flash and Green Lantern: The Brave and The Bold, and Legends of the DCU.

Heroes Return. When Marvel farmed out several of their mainstream titles to Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, the results were mixed. What was NOT mixed, however, was the relaunch at Marvel as the properties came back under Marvel editorial control. Kurt Busiek's Iron Man and Avengers books were top notch, with Mark Waid's Captain America being the only thing edging it out. Fantastic Four was back to its roots and better than it had been for years.

Ah, should I posted over here what I posted over there.

I have heard amazing things about Kill the Minotaur. Like... it's part Sparticus and part Alien. Gunna be picking that up.

Fables and The Unwritten are amazing.

Deadpool has managed to stay funny through changing several teams after Daniel Way moved on from his top tier run on the series.

Disney is buying all the fox proerties. I expect the same thing to happen to Alien Vs Predator that happened to Starwars. Dark Horse is going to loose the license and Marvel is going to start making the comics. When that happened with Starwars Comixology sold every starwars comic ever produced by Darkhorse for 10.00. I am waiting for that deal with Alien/Vs/Predator to grab the whole lots of stories good and bad.

Lance I've also heard that Red Sonja apparently defaults back to Dark Horse at some point this year as well - kind of a good thing in my view as I think dynamite has kind of lost its way with what to do with Sonja after their main arc ended; and they don't seem content with just writing sword and questing adventures in the ancient world.
Plus with Conan and Sonja under one company again it creates more chances for cross overs.

The trick to liking comics for any length of time is to ignore characters and the big events and stuff and focus on the creators. You can follow a good author anywhere and it'll probably be a great book.

Personal current favorites are:
Geoff Johns
Scott Snyder
Brian K Vaughan
Jonathan Hickman

First things first.

Marvel Unlimited is a thing. If you've got a tablet, it's awesome. Pretty much every single marvel comic that's older than 6 months is available on there, at around half the price of a netflix subscription. That's over 14000 comics...

As for physical comics, I've been reading various DC ones.

I think my favourite has been the "Wonder Woman Rebirth" trade paperbacks. They're great stories, really really great and the version of Wonder Woman portrayed in them is brilliant.
The only problem is, they tried to be clever with the ordering of them and it's kind of a mess. Seriously great stories though, but the order for everything to make sense is kind of.
Book 2 (Year One), Book 4 (Early years), Book 1, Book 3, Book 4 (Epilogue)

I've read the "DC Trinity Rebirth" trade volume 1. That's pretty good as well and entertaining seeing the main 3 interact. Wonder Woman has some awesome moments at the start.

I've also recently read the "Batman Rebirth" volumes 1-5. I don't really have much to say about them, they're good Batman stories, and there's some really great Catwoman things in it. Oh, and Good Boy which is an *excellent* short comic, with all the feels. - Go click on that link and read that!
But yeah, the thing with Batman is, I kinda don't rave about it, because it's sort of expected to be enjoyable and good and since the character is so well known and things, it may not always stand out. Whereas, for example, Wonder Woman is very new to me and so more exciting.

The main thing I'm reading right now though, is the Injustice series - Years 1-3, which, considering it's a video game, is way WAY WAY better than it should be.

I'm onto Year 3 now, and well...

I'd like to say it's DC's "Game of Thrones" but that's super unfair. Sure, it's somewhat on the darker side of things - Characters DO die in it, and lots of them. But it's kind of interesting how they do it...

For example, a major 'good' character is killed by Superman, the scene then cuts to a flashback of Superman stopping to help a teenager who fell off of his bike.

It's sort of like. "Ok, this is a story with a finite ending (the opening of the Injustice computer game), so lets tell a story the way books are written, without the whole, 'putting the toys back in the toybox once we're done with them' that normal comics do."

I collect only a handful of comics anymore, but I'll keep collecting Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai and Gold Digger by Fred Perry until they stop making them. And though he doesn't put out many comics these days, anything by Sergio Aragones (Groo the Wanderer) is pretty much gold.
