I bought the Spire of Dawn set (kinda wish I'd bought another now, but that's a tale for a different time) several months ago. I did a lot of studying up on Skaven shortly after buying it. I believe that group was supposed to be Clan Moulder. But, with the special units that come with the miniatures you get, they fit very well into Clan Skryre as well. So, I started painting mine as Clan Skryre. Since Clan Pestilens is the only clan that actually has a Battletome, and using Azyr, Clan Verminus is the only clan that uses Clan Rats as Battleline, I have to end up setting up my Allegiance to Chaos and my Allegiance Abilities to Chaos as well. I have a feeling that I lose out on some Skaven specific abilities that Clan Pestilens has available to them.

Anyway, all that said, is it worth playing Skaven if they aren't Clan Pestilens right now? Can they be a good army in Clan Skryre, Clan Moulder, Clan Eshin, or many of the other clans?

Thanks in advance.

Are non clan pestilens worth playing?
*Laughs in skryre*

Oh God yes they are.

I have a 2k clan skryre list that If you roll ones on everything it can do 32 mortal wounds per shooting phase, with a statistical averages of 64 mortal wounds a shooting phase.

To many unpainted models to count.

Yeah like the above I have a skryrefyre list that's quite potent. Strong enough to hit tournament level AoS easily. But regular Skryre lists are still solid without going into the overpowered level needed for tournaments. It depends on what you are looking for, since generic Chaos allegiance Skaven are perfectly viable for casual play as are Eshin and Moulder.

If you go up against a gaunt summoner, use everything in your power to take that guy out. Gaunt summoners destroy most skaveb lists

Quite frankly outside of pest and the one skryer thing, most skaven stuff are on the subpar side

not that they dont have nice things.

im finding that big blobs of rats stickaround quite hard with a grey seer which can be nice for objective overrun

the Deceiver is pretty fun getting sneaky with that skitter leap.

storm vermin and storm fiends both do good work.

but its not going to be nearlly as easy mode as deep strike your entire army 5ish inches away and roll dice.

or plauge stuff with its obscene amount of attacks and BS verminlord that for some reason can cast two spells.

Edit: personally wana mess around with deceiver throwing a screaming bell its so expensive but i think it may be hilarious once or twice.

You say most Skaven are subpar but this list includes most Skaven, or at least most of what is actually playable. Certainly when people think of generic Skaven it's clanrats & stormvermin with support characters, something that is definitely good. Packmasters, giant rats, rat swarms, weapon teams that arent the doomflayer, skryre acolytes, warlord, grey seer, vermin lords, thanqual, all stuff that that is solid/good for the point cost.

Eh i dunno im probably projecting when i say sub par because often times even when supported properly clanrats dont do much and stormverim while strong, melt like hot cheese on a sidewalk. that and i think im just being salty about playing against stormcast and their flippin fulminators just wrecking my gak.

and in honest truth even with a subpar set up every game has been really close just from the fact that rats get some very strong combat maneuver tricks. (for objectives which is pretty fluffy way of playing rather than just tabling the enemy imho)

i think the most subpar of them all are the doomflayers, and possibly the screaming bell (though i do forget why).
