I know this isn't the 40k forum! Here me out, though.

I've always been more a fantasy guy, with WHF and D&D and things like that. Lately I've been wanting a change though, and I've finally decided to delve into the world of Warhammer 40k. I'm also more of a board game/skirmish/RPG sort of guy when it comes to tabletop, so while the army aspect of 40k isn't completely out of the question (it's something I'd like to try down the world), I'm not interested in buying an army outright at the moment.

So here's what I'm really after! Some of them delicious 40k box games. Which one though? I'm honestly pretty open to any of GW's boxed games, but it's all a little overwhelming. I think I like Shadow Wars due to the fact I could use space marines and such, but I keep reading Necromunda is the better game/campaign at the moment. I kind of enjoyed X-Wing and isn't there a 40k game involving ships?

Also, any good book recommendations? I love to read books of whatever setting I'm into as a way to familiarize myself with the world and for roleplay and what not. To start with, is there something recent that might make a good starting point for me?

Thanks guys.

Since you're posting in the Specialist Games forum, I'll adjust accordingly. Go with Necromunda.

It's an excellent bridge between tabletop and RPG. Also easy to play with a small group of minis.

For good 40K background, I highly recommend the Eisenhorn Trilogy.

Yes there is a 40k ship game, Battlefleet Gothic. However it is more in the vein of Armada rather than xwing. Lots of capital ships wandering about like old school sailing ships rather than fast paced dog fights.

I have rather enjoyed the Gaunts Ghosts series. The Ciaphas Cain series is vreat fun as well, although it is rather less serious and much more lighthearted than most 40k stuff.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
