I'm starting an Inquisition Army, and have some questions regarding the Imperial Cult: How materialistic is it as a religion? As in, are there miracles ever performed in the emperors name, or is it very scientific and think all such paranormal things are heretical? How much has it varied in the fluff, like what are some extreme opposite viewpoints within it?

I'm trying to decide the political viewpoints of my Inquisitor to determine what sorts of acolytes I should build, so some examples would help me figure out what would fit and be 'fluffy'.

Thank you!

Pretty much, there are as many subtle varitions of it as there are worlds in the imperium. But broadly:

~ Miracles represent direct intervention by the emperor. These do happen (supposedly) and that's basically what Sororitas Acts of Faith represent. Living saints are essentially channeling the emperor's favour.

~ Daemons and daemonic temptation/corruption are a 'thing' in a nebulous spiritual sense, but nowhere does the Imperium publically admit the existence of actual, real, stab-you-in-the-stomach daemons.

~ Mutation reflects in some way a spiritual taint. Mutants may be something to be used and expended in the service of humanity but they are only tangentially part of it.

~ There is only one god (the emperor) but perceived in different ways; some worlds see the emperor as the sun-god, or all-father, or whatever. Some see the loyalist primarchs as a tier of demigods alongside the highest saints (like sebastian thor)

There isn't really a single homogenous Imperial Cult. Its more of a collection of thousands upon thousands of various cults and creeds all bound by a very small set of core beliefs.

What is OK in one version of the Imperial Cult might be heretical in another. At least as far as the small things are concerned. Mutation is almost always viewed negatively, which can range from simplely shunning the mutant to active extermination. Often depending on the severity of the mutation.

Psykers are usually always feared. Even ones which are sanctioned.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

As for materialism, that too would depend on the actual priests and cult versions involved, though much seems to be based on some sort of TV/Hollywood medieval catholic church.

A tough frontier preacher isn't going to burden himself with gold and jewels, he'll carry (well-crafted and expensive) weapons, functional armor and a prayer book. The cardinal of a major cathedral world on the other hand is likely to dress only in the finest, most precious cloths and ornamented regalia in order to show off the power and wealth on the church. Regular people are expected to donate cash or work, which might be one way someone with no money but some useful skills gets to work for a priest and eventually an inquisitor...

Lets not forget the radical inquisition. Utilizing xeno weapons and channeling chaos powers from the warp to smite the enemies of the emperor. Using all that's alien and evil to fight evil.... For good?

Some may call them heretics...
