I've recently started putting together a small detachment of imperial fists and I'd like to be able to use them in an upcoming game without having to go down the shattered legions route (as I want to use a primarch in my main detachment) I've currently got an HQ model and a squad of veterans with two heavy bolters but I can't figure out a way of legally making them troops in an allied detachment. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Put a Praetor in the Allied Detachment. As per Rites of War (Legion red book p.17) a detachment may only have one Rite of War, which implies that Rites of War are locked to the detachment the Master of the Legion is in and taking a Master of the Legion (which requires the army as a whole to be 2,000pts+) in both detachments should let you select a Rite for each one.

(I'm fairly certain you can't use a Delegatus in the Allied Detachment for that purpose since his rules require him to be the Warlord and your Warlord must be in your Primary Detachment.)

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

You cant. There is no way to take vets as a troop unit in an allied detachment to a legion astartes detachment.

You are correct in your view of the way row effect detachments however Pride of the legion has a caveat that you canot take an allied force detachment.

Addendum: Forgot to check that part, sorry. I have found one Rite that can be taken in an allied detachment that would give you Veterans as Troops, but it's The Reaping (Death Guard only) and lets you have them as non-compulsory Troops so they can't be the only unit.

(As an interesting sidenote plenty of Rites that change what are Troops are primary-detachment-only, but Armoured Breakthrough (Predators as Troops) isn't one of them.)
