I've been attempting to paint my tac squad as Imperial Fists, with mixed success. Is yellow truly much harder than other colors? I used modelmasters acrylic yellow, agrax earthshade, then yriel yellow and, well, it looks splotchy and rather mediocre. Idk if yellow is bad for beginners, or if it's just me! Any tips? Should I bail out on the yellow?

Yellow is the most difficult colour to paint, it's not just you. Basecoating with an ochre colour or just spraying yellow in the first place can make life easier, painting yellow over black is an execise in futility and painting it over white isn't ideal either, unless it's a very light yellow. Yellow paints have terrible coverage. Covering ochre with yellow is less frustrating.

Shading is another problem, it's very easy to make yellow look dirty or even not yellow by overshading. Muted orange can work for shading, as can ochre. It depends on what you want. In any case, you need to be careful and use a technique you're proficient with or it's not going to be as good.

Highlighting is more straightforward, use a lighter yellow than the base and be careful. Shoddy work shows extremely well on yellow sadly.

If you're not dead set on Imperial Fists, I'd suggest using a less unfriendly colour scheme. Almost any SM chapter is easier to do.

Yellow can be quite "simple" to do, you just have to tackle it the right way.

1. Use a medium or light grey primer.
2. For a base coat you should use a goldbrown or an ochre tone.
3. Yellow just for highlights!
4. Ivory (yellow+white) for edge or maximum highlights.
5.Any light brown (brown wash) for shadows will do.

Example of a ochre yellow recipe.

In short, yes. Yellow is extremely tough to pull off. GW has a couple videos dedicated to it, and you can probably get away with yellow spray + drip, but it's nothing easy.

Prime white to save your self at least 50% of a head ache

thin down the base coats, and do a few of them till the first coat is solid

then do your other stuff.

Did you mop wash the entire model or just the recesses?

Yes yellow is tricky for beginners.

It may seem like a plug but we’ve been told our yellows are easy to work with and provide superb coverage over any colour.

I do agree with the statements above, it can be a tricky colour to work with for a beginner, our paints provide the exception.

Airbrushing is seen by some as a shortcut... and it is. It makes painting tricky colors like yellow really simple.

I used to avoid yellow entirely after disasters when I first started painting, but in the end found a workable solution with what I think used to be called Bubonic Brown in old Citadel terminology. These days I use Army Painter Desert Yellow with the same basic method. If you're looking for a bright 'banana' yellow then it probably won't work for you however. I only ever do fine details and trim in that sort of colour, I'd never try to put it on large areas of models.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”
