Hello all, newer player here who's looking for a good carrying case for minis. I've gotten the, "Shoe Box" answer a few times, but, keeping fragile, expensive minis in a box haphazardly rubs me the wrong way. So, what are some of the best wargaming cases for the cash they cost? Thanks!

I'm assuming you're not shopping for a purpose built, fabricated case here. More towards the DIY category I've seen, but not done, some budget options. The most interesting thing I've seen is to buy cheap plastic storage boxes, line them with sheet metal hot glued into place, and then glue magnets onto your models. Works best with a modern plastic army.

I’m a big fan of KR Multicase. Battlefoam has a lot of supporters as well. There are a few other companies thatmake foam/cases, but those are the big two that get talked about the most.

Lots of do it yourself ideas. Or gun/camera cases.

At this stage my favorite bags/trays are GamePlus.

All trays are pluck foam (you pull out the cubes it's pre cut into to make the holes for your models) and cost about 10.00 regardless of tray thickness (usually companies charge much more for thicker trays). And the bag has a lot of very useful pockets and pouches around it. Also dirt cheap at 40.00

KR Multicase for me! Can be bit tricky to get right foams as there's so many due to many armies but they have guidelines for common GW models and can help you out if you ask for your specific needs.

KR here, too. I try to set aside roughly an extra 1/3 of the cost of the models to get cases. A case for 4 drop pods costs around the same as 200 troops, so it varies.
If you send them a list of your models, they'll tell you what cases you'll need.
I have snaps of their stuff in my Gallery.

Battlefoam stuff sounds good, but I have been hearing bad things about them (or just the owner). Read around.

I’m really sorry for saying this, but I keep all of my minis in a plastic bag and packaging peanuts. Like all of them. But I do own a citadel case which isn’t bad; the top goal can hold rhinos and the like.

I go to foamorder.com and get a sheet cut out for a dozen for 50 bucks. Then cut the holes myself and glue a bottom on. Then its into a legal box that fits 3 or 6 depending on dimensions.

Really Useful Box 33L (https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/396789/Really-Useful-Box-Plastic-Storage-Box/) + Sheet metal (either hot glued to the box or stick magnetic tape on the inside so you can pull the sheet metal out if needed) + magnets under the bases.

I like the Really Useful Box over other plastic bins (though you pay for it) because of the rigid, flat-from-corner-to-corner bottom. The interior of the 33L box is just over 1ft by right at 2ft, meaning you can buy a 1ft x 2ft piece of sheet metal at the local Lowes/Home Depot and fit it in without cutting.

I use pluck foam and comic book boxes. I've found some that fit the standard pluck foam cuts perfectly. The short boxes hold one stack and the long boxes hold two stacks side by side.

They're relatively cheap, surprisingly durable, and it's easy to store different armies in different boxes. I got everything off of eBay, I'll add links when I get home.

Foam works pretty well for a small collection or small army transport.

consider magnets and metal trays or vise versa for lager collection. its really easy to make.

I use one of the army-carrier bags that were mentioned above. If you're looking for cheap though - you can just buy the inserts and shove them in a cheaper bag. The foam inserts themselves are like 9 dollars each. Small price compared to your minis. The actual carrying bags are a bit pricier. They are fairly decent bags though. Most have pockets for your dice, rulers, and books.

While I'd say it depends entirely upon your army and what material your models are made of, you have several choices.

Battle Foam
Army Transport
Feldherr Cases
Tabletop Tyrant
Games Plus
KR Multicase
Games Workshop

etc.

Personally I'm currently using some Bigso boxes with magentized trays (hand made) for carrying my silly Eldar models, but I would have preferred a magnetized solution if I didn't run flat bases. I also use several spare Pelican cases I had laying around - using foam from an old GW case and some Tabletop Tyrant foam.

Had a Battlefoam bag and thought it was hugely expensive for the quality (poor). I am purchasing a KR box for some additional models soon - as they have the best overall reputation and reasonable prices.

I mix and match. I have:

* old GW cases, both sizes. Work perfectly well, and cheap as mostly bought second hand.
* soft cases - 1 GW, 1 "other" (don't know who). Also work well and hold tons of infantry
* 2 GW "Monster" cases for the big big/ fragile stuff, filled with foam cubes
* toolboxes. Cheap. Does the job ok, but a little more vulnerable to arm snaps. Brilliant for genestealers, who go in one in a tangled heap
* laptop transport boxes. Free. Stout cardboard and eggshell foam top and bottom. Not as pretty, and needs to be carried horizontally, but - free.
* Shoe boxes. Monoliths poke out the top, but monoliths poke out of everything except monster boxes.
* Poker set boxes. Magnetised.
* Underbed storage boxes & peanut chips. 3 for £10. Handy for flyers, vehicles
* GW (or other) starter set boxes. Handy size for a small force, stout cardboard. Still using gorkamorka box for paints....

I get snap shut plastic containers and then hot glue sponge as needed and then get microfibre cleaning clothes and make little pockets for the figures. I adhered the microfibre cloth to the sponge with some spray adhesive.

Personallt, I really rate KR. Whatever you go for though, I think it’s totally worth it – if you’re spending time, money and effort on models, it’s totally sensible to spend a fraction of that on the means to transport them without ruining your hard work.

I play Tyranids... and i use battle foam to get to the event.

Once i get to the tournament i put my models into a plastic open-topped tupperware case that is partitioned, so i can quickly and easily move from table to table as necessary.

I ordered one of these earlier this week, I can't wait for it to arrive! Could you give any kind of estimation as to how many minis you can fit on a tray? What size are you using for infantry? I ordered mostly 1.5", I'm hoping that will suffice for most of my needs.

I took some of the clear plastic stack able sewing boxes from a hobby store. Lined the bottom with sheet metal, then magnetized all my models. You can hold it upside down and nothing falls.

If you are transporting things like dark eldar (lots of pointy bits and fragile stuff) you can't really use foam. Open air transport (magnets) works great.

I do this, too. Works very well and the magnets I have are strong so the models don't move.

I've heard good things about KR, but if you're traveling a long ways (especially by air), then Battlefoam is a great choice. The owner can get heated (online; won't affect customer service), but the product is great and the people that work there are friendly.

I bought a bag for my first Adepticon in 2009, and I'll be taking it with me again this year. They do last, and protect the models quite well, and you can get some amazing custom cut foam.

For a price.

It depends on how you pack them in. In one tray i have 12 zoanthropes spaced so the foam is holding each base in place. In another i fit maybe 30 tau infantry? 24-30ish with a couple drones each one having its own slot.

For gaunts and gants i pluck out rows and overlap bodys over tails. Like that i can fit 40+. Il take some pictures of trays this weekend.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My local store stocks the trays. So i go in with my models and line them up to find the size i need.

I use a Battlefoam P.A.C.K. 720 case, as it's big enough to transport a fair amount of minis. For large and/or awkward models (like my Bloodthirster, Mortarion, Knight, Stormsurge, etc.) I carefully line a shoe box with bubble wrap and gently place the model inside. It's hard to find a foam tray to fit those kind of models, so I do the next best thing, and I have yet to break one or damage the paint.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I use a battlefoam case, but it gets annoying a lot of the time when I have models that are just slightly too big for the foam I've got and would get bent if I tried to force the issue.

As a stopgap I keep excess strips pulled out of pluck foam trays over the years and pack them around models I'm moving in a cardboard box of some kind.
