So Age of Sigmar seems like dying out at my shop lately less and less people interested. But kings of war all of suddenly picked up and seems like its going steady, i was considering bringing my freeguild army over. I'm not really sure how to go about building a list yhough, are there faction books like sigmar has or is it one big rule book for all? also does everything have to be on squares?, about two months back i went through transferring all my square based empire units to rounds then people stopped playing -_-, i still use movement trays for my rounds though.

So...

There is the main rulebook (rules are free from the site), and a bunch of suplement books like Uncharted Empires that expand into armies like Salamanders, ratkin, etc. Then there are some campaign books.

At it's core, all you need are the rules. You can build your lists online from the army builder site

http://kow2.easyarmy.com/

One of the beauties of KoW are fixed base sizes. You can adapt your round bases to the correct size bases (troop/regiment/horde), there are some out there. If you decide to rebase, then you can take advantage of multibasing (you don't remove models in KoW - just the entire multibase)

Do you know any companies that make large squares with round base slots in them? that way i can still play both games if sigmar picks back up again. i figured i can find the size i need corresponding to the chart multi-base that way and just use magnets to keep them on tight.

Try LITKO Game Accessories They do make the trays you mention, but I'm not sure they are the right size for KoW. They say they do custom work. While I have not used them for custom work, I have purchased a variety of bases and other accessories from them in the past and find them reliable.

Here's the LITKO link: http://www.litko.net/categories.php?category=Movement-Trays-%26-Inserts/Rank-Trays Since they're in America, like you, they're probably cheaper overall, as well as faster to ship. But I can't vouch for any of the various tray adapters out there (there are a couple more on top of these two too). This topic has actually come up a few times very recently, on the FB KOW group (which you should join as it's basically the most trafficked KOW venue online: "Kings of War Fanatics") and the Mantic forum (mantic.club, the second most trafficked KOW venue online). Basically, these trays will mostly work for you, but you'll find that your dimensions will be off (too deep) and you'll have too few models per unit size. Neither of which is ideal, but neither of which is the end of the world and, barring extreme competitive play (which doesn't exist in this game), you'll be fine. Maybe dinged on painting at tournaments but fine.

As for using your Freeguild, you'll probably want to look at Kingdom of Men or League of Rhordia. Rhordia is typically billed as the Halfling Army, but in reality it ports over the old Empire line from WHFB pretty well, which is a little more mythical than just a bunch of human military types, which is KOM's bag. Rhordia is pretty much a gimme if you want to run Demigryphs (they're called Honor Guard and are brilliant).

KOM are in the basic KOW rulebook, Rhordia is in Uncharted Empires. Though all their rules are on EasyArmy as well.

EDIT: Wargames trays look nice, easy to use and cheap. +1 for being KOW-centric.

In case your army is of a more religious theme, also note that Basilea in the main KoW book are another human faction with a more "zealot" theme, they are perfect for a sigmarite army.

Using the Old World as a reference :

- Kingdoms of Man is perfect for an army centerd around state troops and vanilla war machines, maybe something like an Aldorf army

- Basilea is for a Sigmarite force, with no gunpowder, but lots of fanatism, flagellants, priests, holy paladins

- The League of Rhordia can be used for a Nuln army with lots of exotic war engines, also provide a lots of halfling options for the Moot, and they have the famous House Guard for your demigriffon as well as knights so they can also be used for a knight order (well, all three armies have a form of knights, but only rhordia has demigriffon equivalents)

And of course you can use the allies rules to mix, like for exemple using a small allied Basilean force to represent a force of sigmarite zealots led by a warrior-priest or witch hunter

on the forum. Obviously

If by Sigmarite you mean Bretonnia, yes.
Basilea is meant to be a Bretonnia analogue. I guess it could represent the Church of Sigmar, but its clear to me that its meant to be a Bretonnia expy, with its focus on medieval themed units and faith.

Brotherhood are Bretonians - lots of cavalry, peasant troops, etc.

How is that different from Basilea? They also have cav and peasants, don't they?

Yeaaa Brohood is a very clear Bret port, complete with pegasus knights, questing knights, peasants of many flavors and everything. I don't know of a converted Bret player to use any other list (though sure, they could if they wanted to).

Basilea I barely understand, having never faced them (outside of allies) or really considered playing them, but even a Salamander like me knows them as That Religious Army. Angels and penitents and warrior nuns being the tip off for me. Though sure, you could skew them back towards cav, although doing like an Amazon thing would probably get more out of the list (kitty riders and chariots and warrior not-nuns).

Huh, if they have pegasus knights then they would indeed be a Bret stand in.
Brets also had a religious theme though, which is why I thought Basilea was their analogue. They had a rule where if they pray at the start of the game they lose first turn but gain a universal 5+ ward save, I think they had battle pilgrims and their whole deal is they worship a woman called the Lady.
Maybe its both. Nothing to stop there from being multiple analogues, after all.

The brotherhood are definitely Bretonnians, and yup they do have pegasus knights: the order of the forsaken. It's pretty easy to go through the brotherhood list and see each match up:Villeins for peasants, Devoted for Damsels, etc.

I honestly think Basilea is meant to be their own thing, and by that i mean they're based off the Byzantines rather than something warhammer. I mean, they're called Basileans, for one, their capital is on a strait where two continents meet, it's called the Golden Horn... They couldn't say "This is Constantinople" any louder if they were shouting it.

realism is a lie

It's also the pale surviving remnant of Primovantor, a once vast, glorious, enlightened, and advanced empire, ie after the fall of the western Roman Empire

And, amusingly enough, the Basileans and the Brotherhood don't get along all that well....

It is better to think of the Basileans as The Anti-Chaos Army than as a Captain Ersatz for Brettonians.

Instead of Daemons they have Angels, instead of being Evil they are Good, etc...

Both are quite decent armies - I just faced a Brotherhood army that was played by an 11 year old - which ended in a draw.

The Auld Grump - my wife thinks that I deliberately aim for draws with novice players - she is not entirely wrong.

I think of brotherhood as a combination of Bretonnia and the Northern Kingdoms from the Wheel of Time series. They do have an affinity for water magic.

Basilea doesn't really have a warhammer equivalent. They have Byzantine flavours for sure but are the most religious faction with nuns, and paladins and angels. They are "good" but in a Old testament our Gods are the most powerful because look we have angels fighting on our side sort of way. They are author titration and expansive and don't get along with their neighbours the Dwarfs or the brotherhood.

Kings of War is less of a constant minutes to midnight and chaos is coming setting and more of a multiple factions that all have their own agendas and reasons to ally or fight against each other.

In response to the OP, an old Empire army would play well as Rhordia or Kingdoms of Men. The League of Rhordia is a technologically advanced republic of mostly humans but halflings as well. Kingdoms of Men represent any of the many small human kingdoms that exist in the world.

It's true that before Uncharted Empires, some players used Basilea for their brets, using Elohis as pegasus knights (not a perfect fit, but close), but the Brotherhood is much better, they not only have a true pegasus knights equivalent, they also have various kinds of knights (squire/initiates, knights with great weapons, elite knights with a magic regeneration/defense, that are your graal knights, etc ...) where the other human armies usually have only one kind of normal human knight.

And, for some reason, water elementals.

Playing against them was a great deal of fun, and some day I want to try Empire of Dust against them.

If you have a bretonnian army that you want to transfert to KoWwhile keeping the Warhammer Background, Just think of the water elementals as spirits of the Lake

There was also a player who used ghost knights as water elementals (size 2, speed 7 fit for a slightly slower heavy cav unit, shambling is appropriate for ghosts, and regeneration match the blessing of the Grail knights).

He also used the green knight as a greater water elemental (but putting the model on a big rock or water wave might be a good idea to remember that it is height 4 and not 2)
