I'm trying to start a black templars army and am wondering what models to use as my crusader squads. I'm a new player and trying to build my army unit by unit rather than buying it all at once. Do or can i use the primaris space marines for my crusader squad or do i use the tactical space marines?

Neophytes have a scout stat line and sword brothers/initiates have a tac marine stat line.

Probably a good idea to use those models.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

So id make the tac marines the initiats and the sergeant the sword brethren?

Primaris are Primaris, their own separate thing. Only regular marines can be in a Crusader squad.

You may want to check out http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/forum/7-black-templars/ when looking for advice and modelling ideas. It'a probably a good idea to purchase a few of these to help add some flavour https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Black-Templars-Chapter-Upgrade

Tacticals can be used to create pretty much anything from Sternguard to Assault Marines if you want, you've just got to have the right gear to give them and/or paint scheme to identify the particular unit their are. This can be said of almost any marine kit to be honest as they're so interchangeable.
