Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I've been collecting for over 10 years now and in that time I've only collected two distinct armies (World Eaters Khorne and Night Lords armoured) as well as many one off models and small projects of maybe 1 or 2 units.

I've decided to mix that up by getting the Burning of Prospero and starting a Thousand Sons army, this would give me:
30x Converted Rubric Marines
5x Converted Scarab Occult Terminators
A Sorcerer
as well as a couple of models I already own:
Ahriman
Unbuilt Exalted Sorcerers
and Magnus
(I did have some other models I used to run as TS but they've since been either repainted into NL or scrapped for bitz)

This should give me about a 2000pt list (if multiplying power by 20 is to be believed) but I doubt it's a very good one. So before I go into this new project, what are peoples suggestions on how I should build the Prospero stuff and the Exalted Sorcerers? Should I convert the 30k Ahriman into a Sorcerer or Exalted Sorcerer? Should I convert Geigor, the Custodes and the Sisters into something TS or leave them for another project? Could someone make a semi-competitive list from what I have or will I have to invest in *shudders* Tzaangors?

As someone who just uses Psychic BS to help me get into combat, a mainly psychic-shooty-elite army will be all new to me. Any suggestions appreciated!

For a semi comp list you will not be using most if any of the models you have listed besides Ahriman or Exalted. Gors, Spawn (with stratagem), enlightened and various armor and FW armor are the big hitters we have now. Magnus is a big risk in a comp list and I would say leave him on the shelf. The codex has some powerful tricks and bits but overall its a rather mediocre codex if not used in soup.

I like it because Im not a tourney player so I can make cool fluffy lists and use rubrics . If you need to win games and dont want gors....it wont happen.

To go into a bit more detail on why your current model selection cant be called even semi comp is follows.

Rubrics are overpriced. Warpflamers are bonkers over costed. SoTs are decent but not a optimal choice. Exalted Sorcs are once more a decent pick but for the points demon princes blow them out of the water in most cases (seers bane exalted can put some hurt on).
If you want a cool army (which it will be, id love to see it assembled and painted) then go for it. But that is about all you can hope for atm until we get our next codex.

NOTE : adding in demons greatly enhances the power level of 1ksons (imho) and is very very fluffly. Perhaps look to pick up a few screamers, exalted flamers and flamers. Horrors of all colors are always a good choice.

Maybe I'll just stick with my WE/NL lists for tournaments then and keep this army as a more casual list.

I did think about getting Daemons but right now Tzeentch are very expensive even second hand and I'm not going straight into another army purchase yet, maybe in the future.

What about the other units that come in the Prospero box, can they be used to make any cool TS units?

Well I dont think the loyalist models can be turned into 1ksons so you are left with the actual 1ksons. So, not really.
Dont shy away from a thousand sons army. Just because we are not stomping the meta does not mean it isnt a good army. Its just that a lot of our iconic units are problematic and will continue to be so for some time. GW has had how many editions to fix rubrics and refuses to price them correctly...even when properly pricing the other three cult troops? GW greatly values AP on bolters I guess. Anyway I say go for it.

I also have a Night Lords warband and I find there is some synergy with the two legions in LD debuffing. I have been working on a soup list of the two. Perhaps start there and build up your 1ksons from a small base.

you can proably trade away the custodes and sisters to someone for other units with more value to you. custodoes guard in particular are likely gonna be in demand now.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

There are also companies who make Thousand Sons space marine heads and backpacks - so you could easily convert the MkIII into more "proper" looking Rubrics, etc. Maxmini and Kromlech I think both do Thousand Sons bits.

Don't know if I'd trade them, I having a running project where I take Imperial exclusive models and convert them into something chaos (I've already done GK, DW and Guilliman). Plus I could maybe make a Termie Sorcerer out of a custodes to go with the scarabs.

Perhaps, though I've never found 3rd party conversions to look that good. Plus I'm painting them up 30k style rather than 40k blue, I might add on a few Tzeentchy bitz but I don't want to lose the 30k aesthetic.
