Hello everyone! Im Weather and Im brand new to miniature wargaming. I am starting my first 40k army and I was just looking for some guidance. I have chosen to go with Dark Angels! More specifically a Deathwing army! I have a couple units of terminators that friends have given to me from the old Dark Vengeance set, I've also purchased a box of the Deathwing Knights. I was wondering if anyone had a good starter army list or unit suggestions I should buy next so I can finally get into some games at my local store! Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

Hi there, welcome to Dakka.

Look through the Army Lists forums here and see what people have taken before.
Your codex will tell you what the units do, and how to kit them out.

For Deathwing, you'll probably start with a Vanguard detachment as your army is mostly Elites. For that, you need 1 HQ choice and 3 Elites choices. The Deathwing Terminator units and Knights cover off the Elites choices, so you'd just need an HQ for a battle-forged army. Belial, a Terminator Master or a Terminator Librarian would all be good choices.

You could try picking up the Dark Imperium box (or just the marine half of it). A friend of mine recently started dark angels as well and is pretty happy with them.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Well, it's worth deciding how pure you want your deathwing army to be. If you want to just use terminators that's fine, will probably not be the most effective thing on the table but will probably not hurt your wallet too bad. Including a few vehicles, ravenwing or normal dark angels might make your army a bit more diverse.

Personally, I'd say get a solid core of terminators (sounds like maybe an extra unit is all you need), a couple HQs, then maybe a vehicle of some sort or a flyer to start off. Most of those give good cash-> point value which should make it easier to start playing more games at different sizes.

Welcome to the First Legion, Weather!

Deathwing are mega-cool, but not currently the most efficient thing on the tabletop. That isn't to say don't play them, but just be aware going in, they are far from being a power army.

Deathwing have one trick that is wicked cool, but costly. Deathwing Assault Stratagem. Lets them fire on arrival from Deep Strike, then you can fire again in the Shooting phase. Pricey though, up to 3 CP for a full squad of 10. Still, if I was going to run a Deathwing list, that's what I'd build it around.

So, you've got, what, 10 Terminators and 5 DWKs? I'd batch the regular Termies into one squad and the DWKs obviously on their own. You'll want to get Belial for sure, and probably a DW Ancient and DW Apothecary.

I'd actually recommend picking up 15 Scouts to run 3 minimum sized squads, so you can run a battalion instead of a vanguard. Not only is that more CP, but it gives you some inexpensive units you can have sit on objectives. You really don't want to tie down a unit of Terminators to that. You'll need another HQ for that - can't go too far wrong with a Librarian.

Maybe pick up a Dark Shroud to be your token Ravenwing element. Have it hover near your Terminators to make them harder to hit.

Other than that, pure Deathwing is all Terminators, Venerable Dreadnoughts (of whichever variant), and Land Raiders. Land Raider Crusaders are widely considered the most optimal choice. They look good, and they bring horde-cutting dakka you're going to need.

Welcome and congrats on starting your first army.

A good idea would be to familiarize yourself with the current state of the game. Deathwing are challenging to play with.

Terminators are tough with 2 wounds and a great save, but weapons that can strike them down are common. They are also expensive, which means you will have a small army.

None of these things are show stoppers, but it's important to be aware at the outset. It will affect many of the decisions you make about your army over time.

A friend of mine plays Grey Knights. His army consists of a lot of Terminators, and also Imperial Guard. So he has these elite units in the Terminators, and a lot of bodies - in the Guard - that can absorb wounds and present a different challenge for opponents.

It's good to look around and see what other players are doing. Good luck!

Aren't all DA characters "technically" Deathwing, even if they're not in Terminator armour? All the named ones are for sure, so feel free to pick them up, even if you're dead set on excluding anything that's not 1st Company. Azrael is a buffing machine.

If you fancy trying out other DA units, Scouts would definitely be a good option. Cheap for points and models compared to Termies, and they can deploy ahead to keep some space free for deep strikes.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

My personal opinion is that you should try a Deathwing-Ravenwing army rather than pure Deathwing. Deathwing will give you some deep strike counter deploying as well as minor anti-tank capabilities but a Ravening detachment will give you manoeuvrability as well as swarm killing capabilities, it would make you far more flexible and give you a couple of playstyles to try so you don't get bored.

If you can find one more PF or CF+SB Terminator to stick in the big squad, there's another strat you may be able to take care of that would let you split the squad into two 5-man squads, if they weather a turn unscathed.

Also, have at least one Scout Squad with a missile launcher and one with a heavy bolter - again, strats to take advantage of.

I find sniper rifles to be marginal. If they were a free upgrade, I'd say go for it, but I don't think they're worth paying points for.

People tend to play 1000pts, 1250pts, 1500pts, and 2000pts. Build your lists to those numbers.

Thanks everyone for all the awesome tips! I have done a bunch more research and have moved away from a pure Deathwing army. Dark Angels have a lot of strong units that I'd be missing out on by running pure Deathwing! I had one more question and wondered if anyone had some good recommendations on a good army carrying case to go with for someone who is just getting started in the hobby. Ive been looking into Battlefoam they seems to have some nice stuff. Thanks again everyone this is a great community!

You'll get the usual replies about cases. This is a question everyone starting out asks here, so there's a lot of comments to pick through in a search:
Battlefoam and KR Multicase are probably the biggest 2 people here use.
Feddheur (sp) and similar are common too.
Magnetising the models' bases and putting a sheet magnet in a box is popular for horde-type armies.
Foam offcuts in a plastic or cardboard case always gets a few mentions.
