Lots of people can't stand the Defiler model and end up not fielding one because they know they just don't have any interest in building and painting it. I think the upcoming Knight Armiger could be a great base for converting a much cooler Defiler. I thought we could maybe do a little group brainstorming to figure out some different ways this could be accomplished. So the Armiger looks like this:

The Defiler has a Battle Cannon, which would need to modeled either on one of the arms or as a shoulder/carapace mount, and then there's the rest of the weapons. That's the WYSIWYG part. On top of that we'd need to "chaos it up" a bunch, either generically, or in god specific ways.

So I put it to you Dakka - what ideas do you have here? What bitz would you use, what kind of conversions? And so on...

I never got around to doing one myself, but I may eventually.

This is the Prinzluther model from Dust and there are several versions of it. It's a good bit larger than a normal Defiler, but this is the base I would start with - using the legs/torso and then mounting something on top.

Are you insane man? That's one of the best of the old plastic kits GW makes! I LOVE the defiler.

That said if you want to convert that new knight, I'd say skip its legs and work with the top of the body.

Its not just me - a lot of guys are down on the Defiler kit. Hence the thread. I agree though, the upper body is where the bulk of the modelling could be focused. I might add some chaos-y detail to the legs, but that's probably about it. Getting the weapons done right is the real trick IMO.

Now that I think about it the Knight Armiger torso on the Defiler legs would look pretty sweet. Expensive though, yikes.

@Elbows - I love that Dust fig, it's great. My only concern is for some guys it's important to keep the base GW so they can play it in tournaments. Where guys want to use the finished product will determine what base kit they start with.

Sure, I agree. I don't do tournaments so none of that worries me. I think the legs are a perfectly toned down version for a Defiler though. I hate overly Chaos stuff (hence my entire army using almost zero Chaos bits). I feel like the legs from the Dust kit could serve to make a more realistic purpose-built walker that might be used by Astartes.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I wouldn't if I were you, the Amriger looks absolutely horrible in my opinion: chicken legs, stubby cc weapons, ranged weapons are way too fat and even the shoulders just look wrong. You could probably swap out the defiler torso with the Armiger torso and it might look fine but everthing else about the model is just awful.

If you don't like the Armiger (someone watched District 9 too many times) just replace it with this bad boy:

Armiger top + deffy legs = new deffy
Armiger legs + deffy top = decimator conversion maybe??? Would need some serious work though, like move the head to the cannon position and construct two shoulders to hang weapons from

I built this around 2004 or so mostly using the base defiler kit. Uses the feet from a clickytech mech, the mace from a warmachine Crusader with the old rhino dozer blade spikes to extend it and a battlecanon from a Leman Russ. Front plate is off a Land Raider. Mostly it was just a matter of cutting and rotating pieces from the base defiler kit. Sold it on Ebay years ago, never did finish more than a few models for that Night Lords army

Single shot battlecannon? Or a muzzle loader?

Not the first person to complain that it didn't have a breach for the cannon, I always just figured it shot deamonfire or something Honestly, I rushed the whole assembly in an afternoon with bits on hand and really didn't plan it out beforehand, then painted it the following day. Never occured to me in the excitement of all the cutting and gluing (it also had a HORRIBLE seam down the top of the barrel that forever bothered me). I'd seen a similar conversion the night before on some forum and was trying to copy it from memory and it actually turned out only vaguely similar. I'm still quite fond of it, mistakes and all

This is why GW keeps selling models. You think the Defiler looks fine but the Armiger looks like a flaming bag of poop. I think the Defiler is the bag and the Armiger looks fantastic. And neither of us is wrong! Ain't life grand?

Seriously though, I'm right and you're wrong. /green font

lol, I quite like the lower legs of the defiler...the top bit is a bit lame. I've seen some really great themed conversions for Slaanesh and Nurgle, where the legs were used but the top was converted from other bits, or heavily sculpted/converted.

Oh no, I think the defiler looks bad too.
