traded roughly half of my IG/Genestealer cult for three old eldar force boxes (guardians, dire avengers, vyper, and wave serpent), a box of rangers, and a box of fire dragons. Was wondering where i should go from here. Particularly confused how to use eldar HQs and which ones to get. Also thinking of getting wraiths.

Welcome!

That's a really solid core to an army, definitely a good time for HQs.

You really can't go wrong with an autarch or farseer especially as a skyrunner. Before you go out and snap buy 'em, definitely have a look at your desired craftworld. For example:

-Biel-Tan would benefit more from a farseer than autarch
-Saim-hann will appreciate a bike autarch with lance
-Ulthwe have Eldrad, who is one of the best psykers in game
-Iyanden spiritseers are worthwhile, and Yriel might be neat?

Beyond HQs, it will definitely depend on your craftworld. Which one were you thinking?

Thanks for the reply. Definitely want to go Iyanden for my craftworld

Welcome to the path! I'd suggest the start collecting box as a great way to get going. It's got a couple wraith construct units and a farseer and war walker. I bought two to start my iyanden army. Also the hemlock wraithfighter is a great wraith unit that looks good and performs well too. Spirit seers are probably a must in iyanden as well.

The wraith knight is also a great unit to take advantage of the craftworld trait, and so are wave serpents.

Make sure to protect those soul stones!

The normal WK is kind of overpriced for what he brings, but being iyanden mitigates that a bit. I would suggest though if you're looking at a WK that you get the Skathach version from FW with deathshroud cannons. Having deep strike mean a he can't be alpha striked off of the board. The deathshroud cannons at 10 inch flamers, so you can come in from DS and crush some infantry

We mortals are but shadows and dust...

thanks for all the tips, probably going to get a bunch of foot autarchs, farseers, and spiritseers and either keep them in the backline, or move them up with wave serpents.

Is it better to run eldar as max or min units? i'm not used to expensive elite armies.

It varies a bit but I tend to run most of my units as min sized with a few exceptions. Dire Avengers and Dark Reaper both work well at larger sizes as some of the buffs and stratagems provide more benefit when targeting big units.

20-strong blobs of Guardians work well coming out of the webway provided you have some way to mitigate Morale tests (e.g. Alaitoc Warlord trait).

I stand between the darkness and the light. Between the candle and the star.

Basically two considerations for unit size:

1. Are you going to ally in Ynnari? Small unit sizes for soulbursts.
2. Are you going to use stratagems on that unit, like Webway striking your Guardians? Then take a very large unit to maximize their impact.
3. Otherwise take MSUs for CP.

Just reading along. I'm quite interested in seeing if an aspect warrior heavy list works. I love swooping hawks in particular.

Yes, it works. You won't win tournaments, but it is good. My last few games I played where very Aspects heavy and 100% Infantry.

Some variation of this:

HQ: Autarch Windrider (Warlord, Shimmerplume), Farseer (Doom, Executioner), Warlock Council (4 Warlocks, Qicken, Protect), Asurmen,
Troop: 5x Dire Avengers (Exarch with double Shuriken), 1x Rangers
Elite: 2x Banshees, 1x Striking Scorpions (Exarch with Claw)
Fast Attack: 2x Swooping Hawks, 1x Warp Spiders
Heavy: 2x Dark Reapers (Exarch with Tempest), 1x Dark Reapers

It's not a perfectly optimized list, I play what I own. But I have 100% success over 5 games now.

Anyhow, it's really fun to play.

You definitely need 1 Skyrunner character and 1 infantry Psyker model.

The Skyrunner character should be made to be used as an Auratch or Farseer. Magnets can work for head/arm swaps, but really you can easily model the Skyrunner to look like either depending on your need.

The Infantry Psyker can be a Farseer with an optional head swap to be a Spiritseer if needed. Again, magnets are ideal by not needed as you can simply get the plastic Farseer model and greenstuff over its eyes to make a smooth faced helm.

This will give you the 2 Hqs you really need for a Battalion with some flexibility if you want to change which ones you use from game to game.

got a couple start collectings and converted a missile autarch and a spiritseer/warlock out of some DA bits. current plan is guardian/ wraithlord as rear artillery/ objective control and use deepstrike/ infiltrate or serpents to move d-shythe wraithguard psykers, dragons, war walkers, and DA across the board.
