I've had trouble getting into 30k much because none of the legions really speak to me. I've got about 3000 points of custodes because that is an army that speaks to me, but I want to do something with space marines.
After doing some reading and research I've found two armies that do speak to me. One is a Knghts Errant army. An army made of loyalist members of traitor leagions sounds cool. The other is the Luna Wolves. That is to say, the Sons of Horus before the heresy.

I like the idea of doing the 10th company as led by Garviel Loken. All units in mk3 armor which is my favorite armor.

I've bought multiple copies of both Betrayal at Calth and Burning of Prospero and have some odd items I've picked up along the way so I have 5 ten man mk3 squads on sprue and 2 5 man Cataphracti squads on sprue. Plus a Contemptor dread (resin, unassembled) I can order custom Luna Wolves shoulder pads for troops and terminators from Shapeways to make them look good. So I'm thinking about my army list.

For HQ I've got Loken (a praetor), a centurion and a five man command squad in a rhino. Thats 3 HQ slots. Take Pride of the Legion so I can have vet and terminator squads as troops.

Troops - 2 ten man tactical vet squads in rhinos, and 2 5 man cataphracti squads. 4 troop slots

Elite - contemptor dreadnought

Heavy support 2 Sicaran tanks. 2 HS slots

That totals out to 1,590 points by the time I finish adding weapons and options it should be right at 2000 points.
at 43 models the army isn't too large for me to handle painting and fielding. and I have a lot already to get started on.

I welcome comments.

With only four scoring units, and all minimum sized, you will struggle in objective based missions. It's absurdly easy to pop Rhinos and gun down the guys inside. With no transport (and your Terminators can't Deepstrike), they will be foot slogging across the board where they can safely be ignored until late game- and even then, your opponent might just let you sit on one or two objectives while they take the rest.

What will your Contemptor Dread be loaded with? Might want to consider the Mortis with Kheres Assault Cannons for anti air (that works just as well for anti-infantry as well).

Which Sicarian tanks are you running?

At 2,000 points, you probably won't run into the Spartan+Primarch combo, but 2,000 points is the low end for 30K. I don't play anything less then 2,500, and 3,000 is the standard for my area. My goal with every list is "How will I deal with a Spartan? How will I deal with a Primarch?" Even if it's a "I hope my opponent doesn't bring one", I still try to answer both of those questions. And if the plan seems way too "Rube Goldberg Machine", then I'll come up with a new plan or different plan.

The list is very thematic, but will struggle a bit vs. most competitive lists. The strengths of the Sons of Horus are in close combat and out numbering your opponent. I foot slog two 20 model Tactical Squads with extra close combat weapons and an Apothecary. The only Terminators I run are Justarian because they are the best Terminators in 30K, and I make sure they always out number any squad they assault. My favorite unit is my Spicy Nacho Derdeo with Lascannons, my work horse model is my Sicarian Battle Tank, and my favorite unit is a Destroyer Squad with jump packs backed up with a Moritat and Volkite pistols. I avoid the Reavers as I think Veterans are better. I foot slog with huge squads backed up by Apothecaries and it seems to work very well for me.

You got a pretty solid core army that you might want to change after a couple games. Play it out and let us know how it goes!
