Hi all,

So I've reached a bit of a plateau with my main army composition. Squads of Guard, squads of Skitarii. Robots, Dunecrawlers and LRBTs.

I'm very much sick of painting 10 man squads but I feel that this army needs more to it.

Would things like Heavy Weapons Squads (3x HW Team) be a good addition to this? Sentinels, Kataphrons etc.

Please give me some suggestions for what else I could get that'd complement my current army list.

Scions for Deep Strike goodness? They can be done in small squads plus a Prime?

Ah, I forgot to mention that! I've got 2 sets of 5 Scions for Deep-Strike goodness.

Fought against manticores and they are nasty and Sentinals seemed useful.

Manticore sounds like fun. I was thinking something like an artillery tank.

Having a look at the rules those missiles sound hilarious, I'm definitely considering one of those.

EDIT: Thanks Mods for moving to the right forum.

I'm in the same boat, as I started out the game with a small amount of Space Marines, got interested in Guard, and then all the boxed sets for Ad Mech came out. So, let's talk units.

Staples of every list:
Ad Mech units:

Tech Priest Dominus: Having 2 is good, although you'll probably have more, so just make the variants you like.
Cawl: You just need the one, but he's pretty much required in some metas.
Enginseers: Own 3. You won't use all of them, all the time, but if you're going Guard on top of Ad Mech, you might want to have that many.
Rangers/Vanguard: You don't really need more than 30 bodies of each, if that.
Dunecrawlers: You should only need 3 max.
Infiltrators: 10-20 bodies. Rust stalkers don't work well in this meta, and this many bodies is expensive enough, so just stick with the Infiltrators if you want Deep Strike with Ad Mech.

Guard units:
Commanders: 3 to 6 guys with Boltguns/Power fists is a good safe spot. They are the cheapest commander bodies, and they can still help out in a pinch.
Infantry Squads: You're going to want 100 guys with las guns. I've mixed in some off-brand bodies with my guys so I can use all the basic lasgun arms for cheap.
Special Weapons guys: You will probably want somewhere around 10-15 of each, not including melta. If you have leftover hot-shot lasguns, you can cut those down into a convincing melta if you want, but they are unnecessary. That will give you 15 grenade launchers, 15 heavy flamers/regular flamers, and 15 plasma guys. This should be enough to cover all your special weapon needs.
Heavy Weapons guys: These are going to eat up tons of bits. At max, you will want 9 heavy weapons squads of each weapon you plan on using. 9 Lascannons, 9 Mortars, etc. You can split these among infantry squads, or play them as 3 teams each. Definitely look into third party models or try some imaginative kit-bashing.
Leman Russ: 3 of each of your preferred tanks. You shouldn't need more than 3 of any one type - I made that mistake with Autocannon Russes from last edition, and now I've got a bunch of useless turrets.
Sentinels: 9 max models - 6 flamer scouts, and 3 armoured plasma. You can also play around with the Sentinel Power Lifter versions of you have magnets, and the Forgeworld rulebook for Imperial Guard.

So, to summarize, it's probably gonna cost you an arm and a leg to get all that, but it should be solid enough to play against anyone.

As far as Kataphrons or anything else goes...they're not so good right now. Have fun with a couple small squads of Kataphrons (like 6 bodies), but don't go overboard. The heart and soul of your armies are already ludicrously expensive on the Guard side. Definitely go for Sentinels, because the scout move is amazing, flamers are great on that platform, and the plasma sentinels are good for their points (50 points for 1d3 plasma is nice on that platform). The Power Lifters are also hilarious if you keep them in squads of 3 with the "Crush Them!" strategem (3 attacks each with STR 10, AP-2, hitting on a 2+, for a total of 9 attacks on a 2+!)

Hope you have fun with painting all that! I know it's taking me forever to do it.
