Subject: Are Daughters of Khaine models child friendly?

I will soon be marrying a wonderful woman who has a son (in his terrible twos) who I also love. I'm looking forward to being a husband and father, so I want to do my best to keep from exposing my son to the wrong things during these impressionable years. Is Warhammer a bad thing? I don't think so at all, but I may keep my Chaos models more-or-less in storage (most haven't been painted) until he's grown more and wouldn't be frightened by some of them. Tzeentch I may be able to keep out as they are very colorful and don't look frightening. Anyway, I think you get my idea. Well, it will probably take A LOT to talk my future wife into letting me spend the money on a new army (especially one that costs so much), but for those parents out there that do play Warhammer, do you think that the Daughters of Khaine models are inappropriate around young children? The more I hear about this army, the more it sounds like it could be very strong and a lot of fun to play (with beautifully sculpted new models being the icing on the cake). Thanks in advance SG

It will depend on your own personal moral code.
They are mostly naked women holding daggers and bloody hearts.
At the bare minimum I'd say they are PG-13.

Hm, which part are you considering to be appropriate? Do you think the depictions of women are sexist, and you are concerned they may be influenced with negative views towards women? That would be up to you to decide. They are awesome models, the only thing I could see that would be inappropriate and that I wouldn't show my own kids is graphic violence like torn out bleeding hearts.

I don't think they are sexist or will give negative views of women. But, there is an age where you really don't want to expose a young boy to that kind of thing before he can truly understand it. But do Warhammer models fit in that category especially when these models can be hidden in cases or boxes out of sight of young children if needed.

SG If you mean naked bodies, then surely they see their parents or other children naked on occasion so they would recognize a naked body as a normal thing? Remember these models are not really in sexualized or suggestive poses at all, they look fierce and warrior-like. If you mean graphic violence, then yes I agree, it's not really appropriate and I would indeed hide those models out of sight. Automatically Appended Next Post: To clarify, I would consider for example Kingdom Death pinups to be inappropriate for kids. Those are clearly sexualized and very suggestive. DoK are really not.

I think the depiction of violence is more meaningful (detrimental, perhaps) to a developing mind than nudity (or simply scant clothing). I think one develops an understanding of sexuality gradually, and of course this is influenced by culture, but I can't really fathom a realistic downside to a child seeing nudity that isn't purely or mostly hypothetical. Please understand, I don't want to suggest what you should do, as it's purely your decision and affects me in no way whatsoever. But in my mind, keeping them hidden as if they were porno mags (which are IMO a totally different thing, and designed to be as such) attaches some sort of stigma to them that seems unnecessary.

While this forum can offer some good advice, the only person whose input really matters is your fiance. It's her child whom you'll be raising, and she is the only one who can really be the final arbiter.

Curiosity killed the cat... Once the kid hits three he will repeat everything and talk about everything you do... so it depends what you want daycare and school teachers to hear about lol. I think that age is too young to be explaining half nude models. How child friendly they are really depends on how you paint them.
I was proactive and sold my kingdom death before our son was 1, redid my mini displays, and don't play all my music around him (sorry five finger death punch). I don't agree with those comparing nudity to violence in this game... apples and oranges. In refernce to the game being violent, all my kids know is I roll dice and remove models from the table which I don't see anything wrong with, there is more violence depicted in power rangers or chess for God's sake.
Don't get me wrong, I still have armies and minis like the ones in question, movies, music, etc, but I make sure I don't expose my kids to the more questionable ones. Being a responsible parent and all...

I plan to do the same thing. I would play at my closest GW shop which is actually in a different city. So, he wouldn't be exposed to an actual battle. The only thing he would be exposed to are the models themselves. My fiancé has absolutely zero interest in Warhammer (Fantasy or 40K), so we wouldn't be talking about the game in front of him. And, most likely, I would be doing my painting after he went to bed. There is only a small chance that he'd actually see the models (not knowing what they are used for... just knowing that they are my toys). Just curious what other people think Thanks Automatically Appended Next Post: Just heard back from my fiancé. She said I could buy the Daughters of Khaine Blood Coven box. SG

Glad you can buy the models! I wouldn't be too concerned about exposing him to the game itself though... there is no violence in rolling dice, moving, and removing plastic models.

To be fair, the Daughters of Khaine are probably less explicit (in terms of nudity) then half the movies and tv shows out there that the kid can (or has) seen with the mother or friends, and about similar to a public pool. Its more than easy enough to paint over the mid-riff the same as some companies do for anime shows when bringing them to the states.
Some of the Slaaneshi models and that one old Dark Elf Character who was topless on a winged horse can be a different story.

Only children who have been told that nudity is wrong would find such a detail strange or noteworthy. On the whole I have a very hard time understanding how non-sexual depictions of nudity would affect a child in any way. Painting midriffs in a different color, what? What could possibly be problematic about seeing a bare midriff? I'm VERY curious to see this one answered. I assumed this thread was about gory violence depicted, such as models holding bloody hearts?

I'd be more worried about a small child eating the paint/glue or getting his hands on spray primer before i'd worry about how the models look. By bringing attention to this I think you may be creating an issue where there shouldn't be one. If it becomes that much of an issue just put them in a shoebox out of reach when you aren't playing with the models.
I don't think there is anything obscene or disturbing about the DoK. But there are other armies like Kharadrons or whatever that are about as PG as you can get which is something to consider. You also don't really have to slather the models with blood for the blood god paint either.

Well, you're making a terrible mistake.
Having said that, a kid that young is not going to care about a naked breast on a model (though he will certainly notice that people don't go about in public like that, but people don't go about in public as giant snake monsters either).
You might not want to use the bloody heart bits. If you don't paint it too gory, I don't think it will be a problem. Obviously they are violent, but any other army will be too. And boys don't seem to have any trouble with the concept of violence.

I don't think you fully understand just how puritanical our country is, Mymearan. Though I don't agree with it with the sentiment, any form of nudity or sexuality is strictly taboo in America. That's a topic of debate for another thread, though. The fact of the matter is, even if the OP and his fiance are perfectly fine with their child being exposed to the human form, if the kid mentions the word "breast" at daycare or in a supermarket, it can cause a lot of problems from people who tend to overreact to these things. I fully understand why SG would be concerned.

In America, exposed flesh on women is the devil, is pornography, is a one way door to satan and the downfall of civilization.
In America, a naked tit or too much leg is considerably much more immoral than decapitating your enemy and tearing out his heart and devouring it. Definitely more immoral than disemboweling someone as well.
Just remember skin is the devil, and you'll be fine

Let me stop you right there.
The answer to this question, and any like it is another question.
Would my mom let me play with these when I was a kid?
The answer should probably be No in most cases. Mind you, my Uncle raised me on Heavy Metal and Aliens when called upon to babysit and I turned out fine. Well... I still think my Uncle is cool gak! Lol!
It's probably not appropriate for kids, half nude snake ladies and all, but really it shouldn't be a problem as long as you are actively guiding him towards healthy thought. Like with TV, you wouldn't just let the dude watch whatever without explaining stuff to him right? So if you wanna teach him how to play warhammer you have to do the same thing. Explain to him why the snake ladies look the way they do and that they are just toys and not representative of anything other than an imaginative game piece. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, um kinda gotta throw it out there that list building has helped me with my math skills immensely.
Laugh if you want, I could eviscerate you ad nauseum with witty verbiage and smooth grammar, but I never liked math as a student. Now I'm an adult and I don't know the multiplication tables. So for me, sitting down to write a list is a chance to do some simple math on paper and exercise my math brain parts what been lackin' all dem yers!
Seriously though, kids + warhammer = maths. They won't even know they're learning sums!
