Hello Dakka,

I'm wondering for the fellow players who run Skimmers, flyers, ex. All the flavors of Eldar transports, jetbikes etc.

How do you get these to the hobby store safely? Do you use foam? Do you use magnet trays? Please share your wisdom as I am in a rut.

Thanks

Deep cut foam is what I've been using for years. Works very well for models with flight stands such as Land speeders and Necron Destroyers.

Battlefoam have quite an extensive selection, i.e. https://us.battlefoam.com/space-marines-9-land-speeder-foam-tray-sm18bfl-3/

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Jetbikes are easy: Magnets.

The larger Eldar tanks have a bit too much torque on the magnets to do easy. I just slot the peg in and be carefull it doesn’t fall out when moving, remove for storage.

By not glueing the stands on, everything fits nicely into my KR cases.

Don’t glue the stand into the model and you’ll be fine. Grav tanks and the like are actually very easy to transport if you don’t glue the flying stand in. For units like the recent jet bike models (and skyweavers for Harlequins) it is basically required that the model be glued to the stand. For these, I recommend getting the deep cut foam. I have a battle foam case that has treated me well, but there are a lot of choices on the market.

For the newer ball and socket style pegs you can still magnetize, it just takes a bit more work. I filed the top of the ball off and glued a magnet on, and greenstufed a magnet into the socket. This was on the new Eldar jetbikes. Can’t speak for the larger bikes, but I also magnetized Vypers, so it should be doable.

I have some based flight stands glued to raiders, ravagers, hellions and bikes.

I may have to transport them in foam seeing as I dont want all that tension constantly kicking that little flight stands butt

An alternate basing strategy may also be called for, and I have personally done both of the following;
1. Drill the hole that the hover base goes into so that there is more contact area on the stem, don't glue them together but let the model slide a little farther down the stem to avoid breaking the stem and jamming the hole.
2. Get some transparency sheets, cut them into strips .5 to 2 inches wide vertically, staple tape or glue the narrow ends together, and place on its side and place the model on top of it.

I have to ask, why on earth did you glue the stands on?

A new day, a new time zone.

I transport all my minis in foam, and for flight stands, if the fit is good enough to just dry fit the stands, like Tau drones, that's what I do. For bigger models, I use magnets. Works like a charm.

I don't use flight stands for my Eldar tanks - I use inverted flight pegs and create a "tripod" setup which is 10x more durable and useful. Looks better too. I carry my Eldar tanks in a Bigso box with some foam.

For small jetbikes, vypers, walkers, etc...I clip them to a wood slat...and these slats get magnetized into another Bigso box. Not something I could turn over or toss around, but it's secure enough when carried around. Just couldn't take it on a plane, etc.

I've taken the approach where I drill out a wider hole and use the body of the flight stand rather than the little flimsy peg at the tip, and all I do is take the models off the bases and stick them in foam. Works great.
