The three cornerstones of Warhammer are Playing, Painting, and Getting There. This thread is about moving your models from point A to point B with as little damage and inconvenience as possible. Post your transportation setups here, be they elaborate Battlefoam lasercut cradles, or dirty old cardboard boxes filled with tissues!

I play a Tyranid monster mash, and there is nothing more obnoxious than trying to transport these big dumb things in bulk. I ended up having to use a nice roomy toolbox just to put the three biggest offenders in the bottom. The top shelf gets the swarms of stuff. There’s another snap-open layer of containers on the very top that holds all the tiny stuff like objective markers, spore mines, trail mix, etc.

The other container is an old GW box to hold the rest. A layer of foam on the bottom holds all the metal stuff that has to be secured safely. Next to it is the tools of the trade, tape measure, dice, and cards. Above is a box holding the rest of the monsters, that has to be carefully set in so they all fit.

All in all it holds everything I need, won’t fly in every direction if I hit the brakes hard, and can go in and out of the store in one trip.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

The Brass Scorpion of Khorne is an awesome and beautiful model as well as being an amazing unit to play with. However, it is the most awkward model I've ever had for transportation; being way too tall, wide and long for any of the carry cases I have no I've had to make do with this box in a sports bag. So whenever I play with my Scorpion I need to take my regular boxes along with this massive bag.

My other transportation devices are a mix of GW carry cases and tool boxes.

At the moment, I have two Pelican cases filled with foam for minis...and one box lid which transports my CSM tanks. My Eldar spindly crap is carried in a Bigso box line with wood rails and magnets (to which I attach magnetized wood pieces --- minis are clipped to these pieces with clothing pins).

It's bizarre, but works. I could never "fly" with any of them though. Maybe marines - could stash the tanks in a foam filled suitcase and they'd be fine.

I use GW channel foam for my Eldar infantry; far and away the best product I've found for securing all of the antennae and fiddly bits. The grav tanks go in a pistol case.

My Imperial Guard fit in one of those Battlefoam cubes. The tray filled with metal Storm Troopers and Steel Legion infantry easily outweighs the three trays that hold all of the tanks.

My historical miniatures go in magnetized trays made by a dude in Connecticut. They're too heavy for me to comfortably carry a large number of them, but I only need a couple to pack rank upon rank of 15mm miniatures.

Madness is however an affliction which in war carries with it the advantage of surprise - Winston Churchill

I absolutely regret buying the GW official cases 7 years ago. I dont want to sell them on ebay because shipping for these cases cost just as much as these cases. I paid $50. These cases aren't worth what i paid for them 7 years ago because its used and the newer cases are just better so i have to sell for like $25 but shipping cost $30 but no one would pay $55 when they can get a brand new "skirmish" case for $42.
worst part is that the citadel logo makes the surface uneven for stacking.

I also have the backpack to carry the 2 medium cases. The back pack only fits these old cases 2010 not the newer 2017 "Minotorum" back pack. I paid $80

Even worse is that i spent money on the 2010 big deep box case to hold large models compared to the 2017 "Battle" case. Paid like $80. The 2010 design was gak! It opened in the middle so the top half can fall out. The 2017 design is sensible with a top lid to open from.

Then i idiotically bought the 2010 "crusader" chest unlike the 2017 one which could double as 2 deep box cases instead if a flat brief case. This design was just so awkwardly cumbersome and took up so much space and could not be stacked securely compared to the 2017 design. If you put stuff on top of the box it will crush the models in the middle. Paid $120

Below is a side by side comparison. Left is old right is new.

These where just horrible design flaws.

I dont plan on selling these relics until i sell all my models but that is okay because nobody wants these cases when they can go to a hardware store and buy a tool box with pluck foam for like $30 or less instead of $50.

Seven years ago i dove head first into wh40k blindly. I love the lore, aesthetics, universe just every thing wh40k. Now i know how greedy GW is and the current state of the game. I just cant find anyone to play with. I tried to teach my friends but they dont want to play.

I regret it.

When I started many years ago, I had two tool boxes
GW at the time only had the egg crate cases with the coloured slide locks, single and double sided but tanks wouldn’t fit unless you ruined the foam

I now have a tabletop tyrant kingmaker (144 spaces for 28mm) although I wish I’d bought the 32mm version now as my assault squads don’t really fit

CadianGateTroll, I’ll disagree on the state of the game but we’re totally in agreement on trying to stack anything on top of those citadel cases. Even worse are the ones with the big citadel castle logo that sticks out half an inch from the front. Good luck putting anything stable on top of that!

KR for 40k.

When I bring my Undead army out, I use my old GW case an a pluck foam case that I pulled to fit calvary years ago.

I also have some small plastic bins packed with scrap foam for things like dragons and mortarchs.

For when I moved apartments last month, I used 4 big flat plastic bins with towels zig-zaged to make 3 layers. Got the job done.

Cadian - ditch the boxes and keep the foam. My Pelican cases (which I admit I just had sitting around) are filled with foam from older GW cases, etc - and yes they sucked ass).

You can very likely find a new box/crate system to use that foam in (if it's in good shape).

Before I was able to afford a decent carrying case, I literally used a paper bag.

If anyone remembers a pretty good blonde kid with a paper bag and a bunch of Necron Destroyers in 4th-5th...that was me.

You can try the store and player finder here on Dakka; up in the links at the top of the page. Also post in the local gaming section and see if anything crops up.
