Is this possible? Has anyone done it. Really looking for an rpg type game for a group of friends not sure we are ready for DnD yet.

Having played a fair amount of both Silver Tower and Hammerhal I'd say that the game engine supports it reasonably well, but the scenarios are sometimes configured to 4 characters. You could either get the fifth player to just 'vanish' temporarily, or come up with a solution on the spot. The other problem is it would probably be too easy - my groups with 4 players have usually not found it all that deadly. With 5 players you might find the group clean up a bit too easily, or some characters get to hog all the xp before others have a chance. (Can already be an issue dependent on character mix) There are several suggested ways of upping the difficulty - I'd advise using at least 2 of them.

TLDR - you can, but not without showing some flexibility. Have fun.
