What should I equip on Pathfinders to make them flexible? Would rail rifles be better than the ion rifles?

most people seem to disregard pathfinders in favor of other units, but I run a fairly infantry focused tau list and I actually like them.

I usually see Pathfinders one of two ways:

1) supa-cheep: 5 bodies with markerlights and absolutely nothing else. Use the Vanguard move to either sneak them out of Line of Sight for the first turn, or get them into a good position to use their marker lights. They're fragile and they die, but hey, they are cheap as chips.

2) As fire warriors with special weapons and marker lights. I run mine 9 man with three ion rifles, 6 marker lights, Recon Drone, Pulse Accelerator Drone, and a Cadre Fireblade in their Devilfish with them (I also run a second devilfish with more fire warriors in it to run in tandem and also make use of the buff auras)

I wouldn't say they're an amazing unit, but they're pretty fun and I enjoy them.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

They actually are an amazing unit, with the buffet and really cheap ion rifles they're the best tau fast choice which is saying something as drones/kroot hounds are also in there.

I run 3 squads of 6, with 3 ion rifles each in every list, either to fill brigade fa or to unlock another detachment for more commanders.

I'd rank them in top 3 tau units;
Coldstars
Commander
Pathfinders.

They're drones, depends on your list and available space.
On her usefullness ranking I'd say
Pulse
Recon
Grab

But if you take any of them I'd take a couple of tac drones all.g with them.
