Changing Our Legion's Name

Hello everyone, I've recently seen a few Sons of Horus armies up and coming, seeing these I really liked their colour scheme and wanted to have a go at painting them. However before doing so I'd like to find out a little more about the history / fluff of the Sons of Horus. I'm not a gamer, and have not read any of the Horus Heresy books, so am a little blind to the unfolding of events!

I tried to look on various pages including Lexicanum but couldn't really find any history of the chapter?

Is there a place I am able to find a real background of the chapter and the crusades they have fought / battle strategies and just general information about them? Sorry for sounding really clueless, to be honest I am when it comes to fluff! Please help a newcomer out!

Thanks for any help in advance!

The first three books of the heresy series are by far your best source, Horus Rising, False Gods and Galaxy in Flames. Decent reads, and they'll give you loads of ideas and inspiration.

Horus Heresy: Book I Betrayal is probably your best source for all things Sons of Horus fluff related. From their victories in retaking the moon (and gaining the name Luna Wolves) Pre-expansion, to their naming in honor of the Warmaster himself, Horus. The book does a fantastic job of collecting and cataloging a lot of the history, major battles, characters, units, strategy, and tactics of the 16th Legion. There is some more fluff spread throughout the rest of the Horus Heresy series, but the major stuff you seem to be interested in is contained in book I, as well as all the other events leading up to Isstvan V.

If you want actual fiction (novelizations) of the Sons of Horus, JamesY listed the relevant ones.

For the Warmaster! Lupercal!

+1 to the other suggestions. Betrayal, False gods and a Galaxy in flames are amazing source books for the sons of the warmaster. You get to learn about how the legion works, the ferocity they fight with and meet characters like Lokien, or Abadddon who are big players in the role legion takes.

There's lots of little things you learn as well, like the logdes or the mourningval and it tells he story of how the legion fell so well.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

Also, if you're looking for the history of the Sons of Horus, most locations refer to them by their modern moniker, the Black Legion. They were originally called the Luna Wolves, became the Sons of Horus during the aftermath of Ullanor, and then became the Black Legion after the scouring.
