Hey mates. While I do plan to run the Farsight Enclaves and obviously plan to field Farsight himself, I also wanted to be able to field my own commander from time to time. With that being the case and me being a complete noob when it comes to playing the Tau, when it comes to a Commander in a Battle Suit, is the standard one good option always the Coldstar a better one? Considering I plan to utilize the Farsight Enclaves rules, the extra movement seems like a good option with the Coldstar but I'm still debating it along with what weaponry would be worth it.

Appreciate any and all help you veteran Tau players can give me and thanks again for the aid.

Since the new Codex isn't released yet, i just can guess.

But i would take a Coldstar Commander with 4 Fusion Blaster and the Fusion Blade Relic. You have a basic movement of 20" can fire your fusion blaster and charge afterwards. You get a horrific tank hunter. On the other hand the commander will be dead very fast without any support.

Ultimately it depends on which task you want your commander to fullfil. Do you want backline support using kauyon? Do want to accompany Crisis in the Midfield... etc.

For somebody not well versed in tau lore, whats the difference between the xv8 and xv85? I know the coldstar is the fast flying one. What defines the others?

The XV8 is the standard battlesuit used by basic crisis teams. The XV85 is the enforcer battlesuit reserved for commanders and features a better design. The coldstar is a variant of the XV85 better designed for true sustained flight rather than extended jumps.

A Coldstar is more for space operations than it is necessarily a better flyer. It's speedy but less precise.

In the lore, it's the standard space ops suit and has regular as well as commander variants, but they seem to be intentionally glazing over that after the model came out because I guess they didn't feel like making regular crisis a dual kit.

Huh, never read that lore before, I'm interested now as having battlesuits zipping all over the place like angry hornets pelting everything with burst cannons and missile pods would be a fun list...

If all the rumors are true then a coldstar can't take CIBs which is pretty much the best weapon a commander can take.

A coldstar can't have cyclic ion blasters, which are arguably the best gun. So you're taking an enforcer if you want those.

For farsight, the fusion coldstar looks like an excellent option. He's not beefy enough to go charging in on his own though. I see him more for picking on isolated units and counter-charging. He's not Mortarion. It might be worth giving him a shield generator rather than 4 fusion blasters. Alternatively you could just accept that he's not going to live too long and have him do as much damage as possible before he does.
