I use my airbrush to base coat and get the first predominant color down all in one step. I use the Testors flat enamels and they are excellent, with just a slight amount of thinning before spraying.
I have not had very good luck with the large spray cans of flat colors, as they seem to send out too much paint that hides some details.
When I did a bunch of Skaven for my son, I accidentally got gloss Testors. Of course, the base coat in a very light brown was shiny (Ugh), but a earthtone/black mix wash made the color perfect, darkened the recesses and took away the shine. Overall, perfect.
Just experiment with a wash that gets you what you want - either mix colors and add a touch of water to lighten up.
