Krieg! What a hole...

What is your favorite action/moment/scene from a Black Library book?

Mine would be when Cruor (a Kasrkin squad from Cadian Blood) shows up for the first time through a melting glass ceiling, raining down death on the heretics below .

When I finished reading Battle for the Abyss and realised I never had to do so again.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Gaunt's Ghosts have always been my favourite. Best from the series is probably when the regiment attacks the Chaos forces outside an Eldar temple, killing 2000 with only one casualty.

Other noteworthy moments are:

- Mkoll bombing the Chaos Magister and his bodyguards.

- Mkoll killing the Dark Eldar Mandrake.

- The tour guide saying Ibram Gaunt was killed during the battle of Balhaut.

yeah that was a pretty good one. I agree, even as an ultramarines fan that was a pretty epic "No Gulliman you had a pretty fething good life"

I know it has been said earlier but when Nykona Sharrowkin beats Lucius in Angel Exterminatus is amazing.

I am a fan of what happened to Inquisitor Jaq Draco in the Inquisition War Trilogy. It was a pretty fitting end to the story.

I also liked in Eye of Terror when Tzeentch learns what The Emperor and his machinations are truly capable of, and gains a newfound respect/fear of him.

Another vote for Angron's speech to Rowboat 'Grandpappy Smurf' Girlyman is a standout moment for me, it perfectly encapsulates what a tyrant, no matter how well meaning, the Manperor of Mankind was.

I like to imagine he has a voice similar to Roger Cross (Ulysses from Fallout: New Vegas )

Angron, The Red Angel, Primarch of the XII Legiones Astartes wrote:"What would you know of struggle, Perfect Son? When have you fought against the mutilation of your mind? When have you had to do anything more than tally compliances and polish your armour?" [...] "The people of your world named you Great One. The people of mine called me Slave. Which one of us landed on a paradise of civilization to be raised by a foster father, Roboute? Which one of us was given armies to lead after training in the halls of the Macraggian high-riders? Which one of us inherited a strong, cultured kingdom? And which one of us had to rise up against a kingdom with nothing but a horde of starving slaves? Which one of us was a child enslaved on a world of monsters, with his brain cut up by carving knives? Listen to your blue-clad wretches yelling of courage and honour, courage and honour, courage and honour. Do you even know the meaning of those words? Courage is fighting the kingdom which enslaves you, no matter that their armies outnumber yours by ten-thousand to one. You know nothing of courage. Honour is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the hypocrisy he feeds them. You know nothing of honour."

Once more it's Angron's speech to Roboute. Partly because it's a good speech and partly because I like someone pointing out how good Roboute had it.

Not only does it point out how good Robute had it, but IMHO it neatly explained the divide between the loyalist primarchs and the traitor ones. with few exceptions, if any, the who where loyal Primarchs all came from "good homes". Whereas the triator primarchs where with only a few notable exceptions, lost the "landing spot lotto"

Scene when Larkin from Gaunts Ghosts is having a conversation with a statue of an angel.

Describing the celebratory arrival of the Invictus Titan legion in Titanicus, especially the Skitarri (much cooler than GW models)

Also the description of the wreckage from orbit falling onto the city in Know No Fear, felt like I could actually see the battleship sliding stern first down onto the city.

I wouldn't say Russ, Vulkan, Ferrus, the Lion, Sanguinius or Corax had good homes. It seemed much more to do with how they were treated by their peers.

The Lion grew up by himself with Warp Beasts, Ferrus grew up alone. It's definitely 90% from the Emperor and the other Primarchs IMO.

So I have to say, Angron's speech didn't amaze me. Even if he is right, he failed to do anything meaningful with his conclusions. In fact he put his own legion through the same hell he went through. Also fighting an unwinnable battle out of pride is not courage. It's stubbornness and vanity at its worst. He comes off as whiny with that spiel.

Best black library moment? Definitely the storming of the Hydra Cordatus in "Storm of Iron". The climactic end featured Titan duels, Iron Warriors vs Imperial Fists, and a desperate last stand that ended in an outright Chaos victory. At the time that was a massive twist to a black library book.

Honorable mention goes to the Istvaan III battle in "Galaxy in Flames".

Another from betrayer:

Lorgar: I'm gna save you Angron.
Angron : why bother?
lorgar: why does everyone keep asking that, because you are my brother?

Tough a close favourite from end times: return of nagash

Mannfred:"Unless you are offering them to me as a token of good faith." "Amazing you actually managed to say that with a straight face, and yes I am",replied Arkhan.

Another vote for Angron's speech too, though not as good as Guilliman's to Lorgar in Know No Fear (where he channels his inner Bryan Mills).

Roboute Guilliman, Know No Fear wrote:Lorgar of Colchis. You may consider the following. One: I entirely withdraw my previous offer of solemn ceasefire. It is cancelled, and will not be made again, to you or to any other of your motherless bastards. Two: you are no longer any brother of mine. I will find you, I will kill you, and I will hurl your toxic corpse into hell’s mouth.

Know No Fear again for the initial attack on Calth, with the Campanile starting it all off.

Gaunt's Ghosts with Larkin seeing the Eldar in the scope, and the beach attack on Sapencia.

Loken punching Lucius in the face in the sparring cages is always a fun scene.

There's a really cool moment in Faith & Fire where the Sisters send in the Repentia - the way James Swallow describes it is exactly how I always pictured Repentia attacks in my mind.

Eisenhorn has his moments too. The inquiry sequence at the start of Hereticus, where he accidentally wakes up the Ecclesiarch and later offers Verveuk some stewed fish, always amuses me.

1) Caphias Cain's accidental charge of the tyranid lines in his first novel. It perfectly set the tone of the series.

2) Fisig's 'betrayal' of Eisenhorn in Hereticus. In every other sci-fi novel, Eisenhorn would have either repented of his slide into darkness or would have convinced his friends of the necessity of his actions. Not here. Welcome to the grimdark baby. We are all damned - even the best of us.

The moment all goes to gak in Know no Fear, the sheer chaos that errupts, the desperate battles that follow and in particular, the scene when the battleship crashes down on Calth.

The end of the Ahriman series was pretty cool, when you truly realise how chaotic, the warp is and how the eye of terror warps time and space around it.

Fishigs betrayal or the first use of Cherubael are both outstanding scenes fron the Eisenhorn series.

Final part would be pretty much any battle from titanicus, reading about titans duking it out is always great.
