So I've been building up my collection of MkIII/Primaris inspired Iron Warriors and got a suggestion to try out a Defiler from another thread. I think I've decided on how I want to model one, so I built a 2k IW list with one in it. I'll post the list and everything else I have to play with and see what you guys think about how I could switch units around to make it more competitive. Please keep in mind that all of these are already modeled, and most of them are painted. So while I do have some NoS stuff sitting in boxes, I'd like to try and stick to the stuff I list when it comes to suggestions.

I also have...

[3] CSM Squad - Combi-Melta, Power Axe, Meltagun
[3] Maulerfiend - Lashertendrils
[3] CSM Bikers - Combi-Melta, Meltagun x2
[2] Chaos Lord w/Jump Pack - Lightning Claw x2
[1] Chaos Lord - Combi-Bolter

My overall goal with the army is to have some decent range with all the Autocannons that can threaten a good range of targets, have some big melee threats to move up the table, while also using deepstrike units to fill in the gaps. What I like alot is the idea of Delightful Agonies being cast on big scaries and the amount of Autocannons, because Kalabrax Pattern Autocannons look so good with the Iron Warriors paint sheme. Having a somewhat small amount of models to push around is also nice, because I like to be brisk when I play to get in as many games as possible.

What do you guys think? I don't get a chance to play very often and I don't have many games under my belt. I love the models I have and really enjoy the modeling/painting/podcasts/lore portion of the hobby and it really reflects when you see my army on the table. But, I'd like to win some games with what I have also!

I've rarely seen an IW list with no Las. Bravo.

I think you need at least 1 unit that doesn't have to get in their teeth to kill big tanks. Maybe bring those meltas? Maybe bring the lord with the jump pack so he can take his buffs where they're needed? Just spitballing. I'm still learning 8th myself.

I'll eventually model some LCs and HBs, but the ACs seemed good for a TAC list and I love the bits, so I kind of went crazy with them!

I thought maybe the mass ACs would be good against tanks? But I figured if they didn't live up to it I'd model some LC/Ml Brutes, or fit in the bikers with Meltas. The JP Lord for mobility is nice, but it serves the same purpose as the DP, and for some extra points the DP does it better imo. If anything, I wouldn't mind fitting in the CB Lord to sit with the AC Havoks for the rerolls, but I'm not sure how I'd shift things around to fit him in.

You're not wrong to take ACs. I was just curious. With that much volume even if one squad misses or doesn't wound enough another one will.

I am not a big fan of taking heavy weapons in any squad besides Havocs due to the rules for moving and shooting. Regular CSM squads are best suited with special weapons IMHO.

Happy Hunting!

Flamers on the terminators seem like a waste.. Combi bolters are gonna be more reliable without random shots, but plasma might be the way to go for antitank and firing twice.

kick the terminators and take oblits instead, invest in some cultists, they are insanely good at keeping melee armies at bay and will probably allow you to run two battalions for more CP. I like the autocannons but it might be good to invest in a couple lascannons as well for T8+, your mileage may vary though dependent on your meta.

@Nature's Minister
Flamers don't naturally ignore cover anymore! So the fact that they're IW flamers just means that they're back to how they were in 7th in that sense.

@ragetastic
Thanks for the suggestions. Obliterators are on my list for things to model, but I have to figure out something that keeps with the visual theme. My terms at the moment are kit-bashed Agressors, so I think I'll utilize that same kit, but with some added guns. Just have to hash out the details and figure out a setup that I'm happy with. Cultists wise, they're very fluffy and good, but again, I'll need to figure out something I'm happy with model wise.

@both of you
The Terms (and their flamers) aren't just an alpha strike unit in my list. They're also a defensive unit that I use for board control against melee units. So the flamers are nice to protect against the charge due to auto hitting, or at the very least force the opponent to move around them to get to their target a turn later than normal. I do love the dakka from Obliterators, but these terms are more of a swiss army knife if that makes any sense.

I understand your thought process, but you are incorrect in thinking that flamers will auto hit in most situations, especially in overwatch and for board control. Their range is 8" and generally speaking, people are always charging from 9"+ from deepstrike. But I definitely understand you wanting to have your models all look like a cohesive unit, definitely feelsgoodman. My thoughts were just from a competitive stand point/tournament scene perspective.

Right right. Good points all around.

For the Flamers, I know what you mean. They're definitely somewhat lackluster, but at least since they're combis there's the bolter option if they decide to charge outside of the 8 inch range. You're right though, it's not the most competitive option.

I do worry about the amount of marine bodies and lack of a large, cheep screen unit. I've been looking into the Mechanicus for models to use as cultists to keep with the bio-metal look my IW DP has (that also has Mechanicus bits on him). But I haven't settled on anything yet.
