The spam was sickening. The two top nid lists were exactly the same. 7 tyrants, 4 mawlocks, 3 rippers, and 7 mucoloid spores.

The dark angels list was 8 dark talons, samael and a talonmaster with a darkshroud, and 2 culexus is assassins.

Top place went to custodes though.

I think the community should start encouraging more diverse armies. When I go, I always try to build a fun and diverse list. I've often joked that I hope i never make it anywhere near the top 20 of a major tournament!

I find it rather funny that Nick Nanivatti just recently posted an article on his blog condemning spam, (hypocritically so), and yet spam wins adepticon and shows up in full force on the top tables yet again, even in his own list, poxwalker/cultist spam. Lol why, you can't make this stuff up.

Congrats to all you spam loving players out there. God bless you all. Great to see some interesting lists. I particularly like the dark angel list by Josh Kinder. That looks like the most interesting and fun list to play against to me

Oh there's a can of worms to be opened there.

The thing is, I agree with the statement but overall the competitive community doesn't want this. They want to stick to the ritual of spam as has been since I started in 2007. You would be fighting decades of long entrenched "tradition" from that point on, but with GW wanting to become more mainstream I think they are trying to tackle this so that competitive play can feel more inclusive but it will be slow. It will take years before they can achieve this.

I don't know how many ways there are to say that the top players are not top because of their lists. The same people continue to do well simply playing within the framework the game presents as the meta by being exceptional at the combination of above and on table skill, sound problem solving, the affability and sportsmanship to not get blackballed, and generally just being excellent players.

Apparently you can make it up, since that's what you just did.

His article (here) doesn't condemn spam. It's about how to make good army lists, and that simply spamming good units doesn't necessarily make a list good. Nothing to do with the "morals" of army building, only the technical aspects of it.

So, you just used someone's real name (or however close your spelling skills allow), and lied about his statements, in order to make him seem like a hypocrite.

That's pathetic. Take a long hard think about what kind of person you are.

Are people seriously spending 100,000's of pounds on warhammer?

I mean, that's over 3,000 hive tyrants, or over 666,000 points...

Methinks you are using ridicious hyberbole, here.
And I thought we'd already established there's no such thing as a "Professional" Warhammer player? No-one that isn't a GW employee, makes their living solely from the proceeds of winning Warhammer 40k events. I grant you there might be some rich kids who don't have jobs and play and win Warhammer competatively as a hobby, but I'm not seeing anyone making £17,000 + after purchasing figures/paints/travel costs to afford a sustainable living here.

I play Warhammer competatively. I can't say I've spent more than £2,000 on it in a _Decade_.

I believe you need to reevaluate your reading comprehension skills. The article is without a doubt casting spamming in a poor light, all the while admitting he spammed reapers to win the tournament, and the example he gives of the hammer in the new year tournament is so bad, because apparently the army that won was, wait for it.... spamming! Lololol

Spam wins tournaments. He tries to make the argument it is weaker compared to more balanced lists, (his 17 dark reaper list lol) which he seemingly thinks isn't spam, and that an army that was spamming fire raptors losing to an army that spams characters proves some hypothetical point that non spam is better than spam.

Sorry, but if you can't see the hypocrisy in that, I don't know how to elucidate you. To further the point, in the very next major tournament he plays in, he brings, wait for it again....... spam! He loses to spam. Almost everyone in the top tables is bringing spam. Woohoo! Long live spam!

Theres a key difference between "hundreds to thousands" and "hundreds of thousands", and that difference could have prevented you from having to write out an unnecessarily dickish retort.

I find this quite an interesting way to say “spam wins buddy”.

Moving on I wonder what will be the next topic by Nick. I am still having troubling visions of all his gribblies shot up by flying Dakka bio spam.

The title of his article is "Why Spam Should Stay in the Can." If that doesn't set the tone that it is bad, then I don't know what would be. As to using his real name, so what? He is a public persona in the 40K tournament scene, not some local schlub to be shamed. He put that article out and then proceeded to attend the next major event with a list that contradicted everything he said should "stay in the can" to use his own words. If he does that then he absolutely deserves to be called out on it.

As to what kind of person Nick N is, I have no idea. To my recollection I have only ever met/played him once at a Mechanicon event like 10 years ago and he seemed like a nice guy at the time. I only remember the game because he was playing a Witch Hunters list with almost no Sisters or WH elements in it (only Dominions and Immolators as I recall). His army consisted mostly of inducted Guard so he could spam meltaguns. I remember because *I* was playing an actual Sisters list and got obliterated by his spam garbage (I might still have that list somewhere. I used to save them to remember who I played, but it's possible I threw it away being so long ago). So for him to come out against spam in 40K is absolute hypocrisy if you ask me.

You should verify what you are talking about before posting insults to others who are legitimately commenting on such things. Your fanboi is showing.

FYI on that guard list, as I understand it he was DQ'd from the top 16 at Adepticon for taking an illegal relic (the detachment is Flesh Tearers, but the relic is BA only. You can't have both it and Seth in the same detachment).

I am also under the impression he was the one who won the Nova Open with Kurov's Aquilla on a Primaris Psyker (again illegal and for the same reason). In that event it was caught early on and he docked himself 4 CP during the final. First time may have been an honest mistake, but second time they were right to DQ him. I don't know the guy personally, but twice at major events with essentially the same "error?" Sounds a bit fishy to me, but anyway. If it was an honest mistake then dude needs to learn to read his army books.

 Crimson Devil wrote:

I don't even consider that list a "Guard" one, considering that 1400 of its points are the Marines. JMO though...

Ignoring the fact that that's an illegal list, I think Nick's definition of spam might be different from yours; I doubt he would consider that list spam because while it includes a lot of mortars it's certainly not entirely mortars, and the Space Marine part of the list does a great job of addressing the weaknesses that an actual mortar spam list would have (namely a desperate need for screens and a way to interact effectively with the fight phase).
