Hey there guys. I am a complete noob who has just got into 30k and I am looking for any advice or suggestions as to what kind of a list will be moderately successful in a 2000 point game. I have purchased the betrayel at Calth box set, Horus as well as the Army of Darkness books and don't want to get tabled in my first game. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the 16th Legion!

Pride of the Legion or Primarch's Chosen is where you want to start. I would convert the terminators in BaC into Justarians as they are one of our best units. Do three units of vets with your troops but that would probably not get you to 2k. Honestly I would recommend picking up either another BaC and some assault marine boxes to make up some Reavers.

Also a plasma support squad in a rhino, with our legion rules they are BS 5 at 12 inches or under so you can delete terminators.

Get the FW SoH 'starter set' with the contemptor, terminators and reavers. Also get the SoH command set with the banner. Have your BoC contemptor be a contemptor mortis with 2 kheres, and have your 2nd contemptor be a melee build. 10 justaerin can be used to deep strike if you have the Black Reaving RoW.
This is not an optimal list, but its the one I can pull out on top of my head. Google Outer Circle Sons of Horus for a more thorough rundown.

All the above is good advice!

If you want minimal cost and use what you have, then yeah, Primarch's Chosen or Pride of the Legion is the way to go.

You should be able to squeeze out four Vet Squads, two Contemptors, 10 Justarian, and your Preator for about 2,000 points. After that, it's all about what you want the army to do.

Justarian Terminators are the way to go. They can be expensive points wise, but function very well on the battlefield. Don't give them all power fists however. You won't be able to benefit from the outnumber rule (forgot the name of it). Go for a mix, like a couple Lightning Claws, maybe Swords or Mauls, and a P-fist for every five guys. And don't forget you get to take a multi-melta! As you can't deepstrike them, and you don't have a transport for them, you might want to run all 10 of them in a giant squad. Something to consider. If you want them to DS, then the Black Reaving RoW will be the one you'll have to take, in which case you'll have to make all those Vet's into Troops, and then you will be far shy of 2,000 points.

After that, there are several ways to go. Sicarian Battle Tanks are probably the best tank in 30K, followed by the Sicarian Venerator (has a big cannon on it). I see more than a few Vindicator Destroyers running around. Leviathan Dreadnoughts are all the rage these days, and I'm seeing more and more Deredo's sneak into people's lists. A couple Rhino's never hurt, and you'll want to eventually invest in real troops or Veterans depending on which RoW you are using. If you like the Terminators and don't want to foot slog, you can go with the Spartan Land Raider, but that's like a "Everyone else is using it, so I will too" kinda choice. Reavers might be your thing, but I look at Vets, then I look at Reavers, and say to myself "Why take Reavers? Oh, outflank or Fast Attack choice I suppose... but they cost more then Vets and are not even close to the same playability. In other words, you kinda have to make your list around Reavers, but Vet's can fit into just about any list. You could also go flyer route- Lightning or Xiphon, they pretty much cost the same and have the same rules, but I think the Xiphon is just a hair better, or get a Fire Raptor. I'd love to try Jet Bikes someday with the Sons of Horus, but not sure how well they would do. Yeah, the world is your oyster. Pick the style of army you want to play and go for it.

I run jet bikes in my 16th Legion lists sometimes and they tend to either do very well or get focused down and die quickly. The heavy support bikes are fantastic.
