Much as X Wing spawned the minimally popular Star Trek: Attack Wing, surely it's only a matter of time before some other company tries to hoover up the cash involved with a squad-based Star Trek shooter*? I'm making my pitch early with my concept for the following:

(warning large image)

Spoiler:

* Yes I know Modiphius are making Star Trek Adventures

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Sounds like a good idea, here is some inspiration;

I jest; different enough universe and hex based, not even remotely similar. Star Trek proper would not lend itself well to a ground-based combat game: phasers are powerful enough in the shows to take out thousands of people (The Omega Glory) or blow up most of a building in one high-yield shot (Frame of Mind), not to mention that the Federation had Photon Mortars that could vaporize an entire hill (Arena).

Also note that the Federation flagship, which "supposedly" had the best security team (lol) and equipment for a Starship never had any kind of armor or protection for its personnel. I'm thinking it's because armor would be pointless as no amount of armor would be effective and phasers were good enough for most situations.

Because of all of this, I doubt that there would ever be a Star Trek ground-combat miniatures game. Starfleet Battles, on the other hand, is mostly its own thing, so would be in the best position to at least update their Starfleet Marines game. I doubt they would ever change it to be a tabletop minis wargame akin to 40k or Legion; they have a reputation to create whole new games than radically change their systems, and they're small enough that making a new game at this point might be too much of a strain.

Also I have minis from when they did make minis for Starfleet Marines.

Did wonder on a table top version of the Star Fleet Battles marine concept.

Skirmish based, boards as various bits of starships for "hit & run" raids, "boring actions", plus a ground based raid skirmish using the GAS & HTS versions of the basic Shuttle, the various bits from Module M as well.

Figure working around 5 man teams on raids would work nicely in confined spaces, anything else becomes harder to explain why the target simply isn't vaporised from orbit

ST Attack Wing is actually a pretty decent game. Something I like is that each ship comes with one or more scenario cards in addition to tokens, cards and other doo-dads.

As for a ground-based ST game, I just don't see the appeal.

I honestly can't think of a universe less suited for a ground based combat game than star trek
