They have an amazing Alpha Strike capability [1st turn hard hit], and can be tricky to keep pinned down.
However, the Frigate and Gunhauler only have a 5+ save; proves to be a problem where, given their 18" weapon range, they have to be in your opponent's threat range to get any shots off, syurren that losing the turn 2 Initiative roll is a bit of a death-sentence, unless you use Arkanaut companies to stand in front as a barrier.
- Nothing can retreat and then shoot, unless stated [like Grundstok Thunderers].
- Ships need to be free to move about and shoot; don't want them in close combat.
- If the ships do get into CC, a Navigator is really good for getting them away far enough.*
- The Admiral is an abosolute god of a character, especially with the right Command traits and artefacts. [Rerollable 1's on armour saves, with a 5+ FnP after? Yes, please].
*The Ironclad's base is so large, that if it gets completely surrounded, it really needs a Navigator in order to pull off a retreat; have to get more than 3" away from an enemy when doing it, see.

The Skyfleet makes sense for getting the core of the army down. Comes in at 860/880 points.
The Start Collecting box has a bigger saving on it, though; best in terms of monetary efficiency.
Also, the Arkanaut kit has equipment for 20 guys, but has 10 bodies. If you're not massively super fussed on maintaining a tight aesthetic, 2 Arkanaut boxes with a box of Dispossed warriors will yield you 40 Arkanauts for £75, rather than £110 out of 4 Arkanaut boxes.

I'd say you should get to grips with their rules, and let that tell you how you want to go about building them up. See what takes your fancy.
And as another note, not wanting to spook you or anything:
I've got a 0% winrate over 10 or so with the Skyfleet set.
I'm a Clan Skryre player first and foremost. I'm going to fumble a whiff and say that there's a golden tactica approach to the sky stumpies that I ain't pulled off yet.
As it seems, I guess with them being Order, mainting Order in the ranks and have everything work together as a comprehensive whole is the way to go.
Skaven stuff just does stupid that works.
