So I've been a fan of Ubisofts little franchise since the first one way, way back in the day.

I definitely do not see these games as some sort of breakthrough masterpiece, but I have to say I've not been more disappointing in a long time.

Let's start with the Pros

1. The game is a more refined version of the previous entries, there seems to be a lot less in the way of bugs, map clipping, etc. I really like that they put more time and effort into this, and they seem to have really put in a lot of time working on textures!
2. The graphics, they're okay. The scenery, while pretty is really washed out and mono-toned.
3. The character customization is neat.
4. Radio Towers are gone!!

Now, the cons and the meat of my problem with this game.

1. Gun play is downright terrible. Most of the firearms sound like cheap toys.
2. The strange hit-detection system means that often you will have to shoot an enemy 4-5 times to actually kill them. It's very unrealistic, and I don't recall the other games being like this.
3. The character customization. I do not like being "forced" to use some stupid pay to get currency. Microtransactions are terrible.
4. Radio towers are not gone, they just wanted you to think that they are. Preper Stashes are the same idea.

I just cannot get into this rendition of the game. Anyone else?

I've been having fun with it, but I came in with no baggage: I haven't played any previous games in the series.

I too was supper annoyed that I saw microtransactions, but now that I'm about... i dunno, 7 hours in? I realize there is virtually no reason to engage in them. As a matter of fact a few hours in and in-game currency doesn't really seem to have much value. What looks like a really big selection of guns is actually pretty limited; every 1911 and AR and so on is pretty much identical to all of the other ones, they're just skins. Once you get your assault rifle, your long-range rifle, a pistol, you're functionally done with unlocking weapons, as far as I can tell. Once you get the 4th weapon slot unlocked you can use that for some other weapon type just to do the achievements to get the perks, but all the other weapons are either worse-versions of other weapons (like the M1A vs the 50 cal), have bad damage vs reloading tradeoffs (LMGs and Shotguns), or then you have stuff like the Flamethrower, which has literally no redeeming value that I am aware of. If you put the flamethrower on, you're going to be dead within a few minutes IMO, generally because you managed to burn yourself to death.

So, the microtransactions don't really add value because it's a very limited menu to begin with. You have your 3 mainstay weapons and a screwing around slot, and the screwing around slot is more dictated by unlocks via reputation or quests than dollars. You can spend the money on the character customization, I guess, but why? You only ever see your character in the menu, and briefly when he or she dies. That's a pretty poor use of funds either virtual or actual.

Despite my complaints I am so far liking it, though. The story is thin but I found the gunplay to actually be OK if maybe a little repetitive, but at this point in my life I like a game I can plop down and play for an hour or two at a time and feel like I got some stuff done. I haven't yet tried co-op but it looks good. Fishing is fun, hunting is fun. I was surprised to find out hog hunting is actually super dangerous, especially with a bow.

I'm liking it so far, despite its flaws, though to me the Far Cry series is a bit of a guilty pleasure, having enjoyed them all thoroughly since the second one onwards. People expecting anything new should stay away or buy it when it is on sale, as this is more of the same, but again more streamlined.

This game is a bit frenetic with the random events alright. Rescued a prisoner, only to have him mauled to death by a turkey. Or trying to talk to someone only for a bear to attack, Peggy patrol to cruise by or random civilian in a car to run over me.

The weapons are a bit of a downgrade, I could be misremembering things, but they not only sounded beefier in previous games, but also packed a bigger punch. There's also a less bigger arsenal this time around and it takes way too long to unlock certain weapons, like a basic sniper rifle.

NPC's are a pain in the arse. They are stupid, keep getting in the way and they won't ever shut up. I tend to take them along for their minimum amount of kills, net the points, then boot them.

And yes, there is ingame currency that can be bought, but you can also find it ingame as an extra reward for scouring outposts and whatnot. It can only be used for the cosmetics and the blinged out weapons and vehicles. I bought some bars myself to get some fancy duds, but it wasn't required as the game quite handily gives you silver bars as well.

That said, I love the game. Nothing like driving down the road, spotting some Peggies, popping the handbrake for a sweet slide, all the while pulling out my gun and blasting away at them. Or going full on psycho on them by sneaking into a camp, disabling their alarms and silently killing them one by one.

Flight controls for both the plane and chopper are also a delight, loving the dumbed down controls for these, makes hopping in and scooting around a lot of fun, certainly made me forego quick travel in favour of touring the map a bit.

Yeah, I agree. I forget the name of the rifle, I believe its the 3rd unlockable one and it was my workhorse in Farcry 4. Now it seems to put out the same damage as the beginning rifle. Pretty disappointed.

In regards to the gun sounds, I don't get new weapons until I can afford the silencer for them. If they can't take one, that's a hard pass.

 BrookM wrote:

Only way I play. Even in the scripted missions that force you to be less stealthy, I'll endeavor to be Ninja N. McNinjapants.

Ya, its a breath of fresh air after Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The flight controls on that game wrecked my life. Granted, I didn't put much effort into it, but I never like them. FC5's controls were like riding a bike.

Played some more.

Helicopters are amazing.

I think Peaches is my favorite companion. I kind of like that sniper chick allows me to point at someone and she kills them, but I also don't like how she talks really loudly, and yells stuff. I'd rather be alone than listen to her honestly. Peaches if a good fit for my skulking around. I know you don't need to be stealthy but it's more fun.

I increasingly wish there were more weapon types. I know I said this earlier but the more I play the more limited it feels, I essentially got the 3 workhorse weapons early in the game and then I have 1 screwing around slot, and I don't think that's going to change over the next.. what, 30 hours or so, probably?

Speaking of annoying NPC's, that one guy that's near EVERY ARCADE CABINET AND WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT HOW YOU NEED TO PLAY THIS GAME AND OH HEY YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN LEVELS.

He needs to be patched out.

Game length and arbitrary triggers are also an issue. I don't see this game being overly long, nor am I fond of reaching a certain threshold in the game and getting auto-hit by a bliss bullet, forcing me to sit through something I don't want yet.

Any fans of the franchise notice that the takedowns are pretty tame? Granted, neck breaking and smashing skulls with bats and such are pretty violent, but it seems limited and even the basic “skinning” of animals is gone as it appeared previously in earlier games. Just a red slash appears.

Previous entries, you used to have a knife and it was violent. You’d get that stealth kill and your character would really dig in with the knife. Now it seems like there are only two animations for stealth kills.

Seems like a conscious decision to tone that more initimate display of violence down.

My Farcry Drug/Dream rant:

Spoiler:
And my fears of the now standard, obligatory Farcry drugged up, momentum breaking, cliched and boring ass dream scenarios have come to fruition. Angel’s entire zone is that fear. Granted, I was just passing through to get perked up from finding all the prepper stashes and skinning animals and such, but I earned enough resistance rep just from opportunity kills to receive some attention from Angel. Now I’m going to save her story for last, if I even bother. I don’t mind it, here and there (like the devils lettuce in real life!), but this franchise leans too heavily on it and it seems like you can never run through it, just walk and try to be amazed by the trippy graphical anamolies.

After 3 FC games that leaned heavily on these boring, time wasteing “deus ex narcotica” sequences, I’m beyond over it. Its supremely weak story telling and just feels like its there to slow players down. I’d rather have radio towers back than have to sit through an unskippable speech about whatever transcendent gak they’re babbling about and then be forced to walk through whatever magical realm their drugs have taken me to. Really, feth whoever keeps deciding to put this gak into the games and double feth whoever still greenlights it.

Am I alone in my dislike of these drug/dream sequences?

With that said, still enjoying the game, despite the removal of the regional fortresses of FC4 and Primal. Those were excellent stealth kill/hide body factories that felt like puzzles that needed patience and planning to overrun by stealth. And if you wanted to take them by overt force, get ready for all out war! But nah, needed more drug trips.

Yeah, takedowns and skinning has been toned down or removed completely, I think they are afraid of the backlash or something now.

I'm taking down miss "I'm so sad, I did drugs and cut myself" cult leader right now, just to be done with her and her annoying little rants while she prances through the grass. I'm also annoyed that when you burn down a field of bliss flowers and walk through the ashes, you are still affected by the blurry vision effect. Ugh.

On the bright side, I finally got around to recruiting Sharky. His mission was a visual and audible delight.

So just watched my GF finish the game and i dare say I have seldom seen such a boring last part of a game, but then again it was a Ubisoft game so I should not be that suprised. Considering how dull the last FC game was and AC origins. But on the brigth side I think we will never have to see anyone from this game in another FC game, should it come around

Yes, the whole theme of "bliss drugs" really rubs me the wrong way. By the way, did you know that you can be bliss bulleted when you're flying in an airplane? It happened to me last night.

There is so little distinction between anything. Rifles feel the same, quests are the same, craftables are the same. I run the same loadout no matter what, and thanks to the microtransactions, you can buy all the advanced guns as early as you want, thanks to the "special skinned" versions.

Quite in MSG5 is a sniper, The girl in this game is so annoying I refuse to use her.

I got rid of Faith last night and man, I'm glad that snowflake is out of my hair. That was one horrible final battle.

Two down, one more to go, plus a crapton of side missions and whatnot still left to complete. At this rate I'll have 100%'d the game by the end of the week.

.50 bolt action rifle (silenced), Sig pistol (not silenced), SPAS12 (not silenced) and MP5 (silenced) / D2 (for when I want to go full Burt Reynolds).

I'd love to try the MP5SD but it's an endgame thing, so feth that.

I go with the AR-C as my general purpose, my 1911 for when I am creeping, and the 50 Serbu for sniping - all of which are scoped and silenced. The 4th slot I rotate stuff in and out of: right now I have the RPG, before I had the flamethrower and the m79 and so on, all the stuff you need 10 kills to get perk points for. Once those are all done I think I'll settle on the RPG since being able to take down choppers easily is nice.

When hunting I try to use the bow but I tend to fall back to the .50 which feels a bit like cheating since it's almost always a one-stop drop.

I like that the M79 is cut down to pistol format along with the D2, makes driving a bit more entertaining as I can now pop the handbrake, do a slide and whip that out instead of my handgun for some cool drive by shooting.

I'm happy that the .50 doesn't ruin skins when you hit something with it, that would've been the perfect counter to using it for hunting.

I'm almost through my challenges as well, just need one more chain takedown, three sabotage kills (ugh) and the 150+ meters kills, which is annoying with the insane bullet drop this game features.

Hey, are you playing on PC? I can't figure out how to do chain or pistol takedowns. I have unlocked the perk, and can even sometimes see the option (for pistol takedowns) but can't seem to pull it off.

Yep, the option pops up to do a pistol takedown, but nothing happens. No option comes up to do the knife toss or chain takedown either.

Also, this game doesn't seem to have a takedown and auto drag perk like the previous 3 games that I can see. Really putting a damper on my playstyle, as I tend to avoid weapon shots unless absolutely needed. Need that "undetected" bonus money!

With this game, I get the same feeling that I got from Arkham: Origins. A solid and fun game, but just felt different with questionable design decisions and its own unique flaws and quirks that I never experienced from the two games that preceded it from the original franchise developer. FC5 almost feels like a step back for the franchise in some regards. Had more fun shooting arrows multiple ways in Farcry: Primal.

I'm not nearly as excited to unlock new guns like I was in previous games, I have no interest in outfits that don't have an impact on gameplay and the perk and crafting menu's seem like a downgrade. I gave this game a B+ when it was fresh, but deeper into it, its a solid C that had me hovering over the refund button on Steam.

Yeah, the takedowns are broken, or at least poorly telegraphed, with no tutorials given like in the previous games. Pistol takedowns are also quite horrible now as you pull out your own sidearm and not one belonging to an enemy.. But for me, it's right mouse button (or whatever key you've bound to ADS) and then mash the firing key as you auto-aim at the nearest targets.

As for chain takedowns, you need to face another opponent while snapping the neck of your first victim, it should show a prompt ("W" in my case) and if you mash it often enough, it should trigger, if the game feels like it.

I think my own feeling on the game are mainly due to Ubisoft doing one of these games (open world experience) every year and after last year's (IMHO) GOTY Wildlands, I've become a bit bloated on this type of game.

Jim Sterling did a Jimquisition on the game today where some of the points he brings up nicely sum up my own feelings on this all: I don't hate the game, it's not bad or boring, but in a market swamped with these titles by the same dev, it all becomes homogeneous.

I am massively disliking though that the game is banking hard on the arcade for its content. The game already feels light on it, so having the community provide for more feels.. gakky. I mean. one mission per NPC in most cases, while in the previous games you'd get several missions with them to win them over or get the power up and win the game. Now it's a single mission and hey, you get the win or the NPC joins your team.

Do you guys have any idea how to get or equip flies for fishing on PC? Google is less than helpful, and I can't figure it out. I got the fisher king perk.

Never mind. You look at the rod in the weapon wheel, which I got, and then you scroll the mouse wheel to swap. The icon that shows it switching is small.

There's a perk that unlocks the black market, allowing you to buy that stuff at the stores.

Oh, yeah....
Spoiler:
I feel that the ending, starting from the whole "resist or walk away" choice, was just one giant "feth you" to the player. Everything you did up until that point? Didn't make one fething bit of difference, because, "trolololol, my magic mind control drug still takes over everyone anyway." The story events that trigger in each region were bad enough (I don't mind forced story events, that's the whole point of playing a game that actually has a story, but they were all the fething same every time: get magically captured, villain mindfeths you a bit, and then you escape, rinse, repeat, because someone never learned the evil overlord rules), but the ending was just a complete wipe of any of the player's accomplishments. It didn't even really matter which one you choose. I feel that the "right" choice is to walk away. You get to save your friends without killing anyone at that point, and the obvious plan is to come back with the necessary reinforcements to handle the situation. And then that song plays on the radio and you presumably will kill the others in the truck. And the nukes from the other ending will still go off, anyway. Which brings me to the other ending option of fighting against Joseph. You now risk getting everyone killed, nukes go off, and you're now stuck in a doomsday bunker with a self-righteous Joseph making the entire game one big mess of "everything you did, didn't change anything, sucks to be you".

And what is up with these nukes going off? I read in a few articles online that there are a few minor ingame references to the global situation going bad (apparently if you just sit and listen to the radio you'll hear some news or something, but who does that?), but otherwise I didn't come across any actual hints that the next Far Cry game could be a Fallout clone.

Although, a Far Cry version of Fallout could be somewhat fun...

But, still, feth the ending.

I like both franchises, though I feel spoiled by Wildlands, which offered more of everything and in a better package. Mind, this is my opinion. A better story, better gun play, more weapons to choose from, not to mention a larger and more diverse environment that is filled to the brim with encounters, bases and mini-bosses. Wildlands is one of my top picks for best games of 2017, again, my opinion. If there was one thing Wildlands failed at, it was half of the promised singleplayer DLC, Narco Road is atrocious. Simply horrible. Fallen Ghosts more than made up for it, but it's still a damned shame the DLC kicked off with such a downer.

Far Cry 5 plays well, it's a slim and trim of the previous game, hammering out most of the problems or stumble blocks from earlier, but at the same time also feeling a whole lot emptier and more devoid of activity, with less content all round. Less guns, less NPC missions, less enemy characters to pursue.. then there is the highly annoying "you will be taken for a ride" mechanic where you are auto-abducted once you reach a certain score threshold. Add in the now much hated "drug haze" story telling and well.. not amused. The NPC's are also obnoxious and a chore to bring along, never shutting up, getting downed quite handily by the enemy due to their own stupidity, or getting domed by you while riding shotgun as you want to pull off a headshot while driving, but Sniper McScreamface keeps blocking the shot with her massive head.

I also can't help but feel that the game is hedging a lot of bets on the Arcade mode as a means of keeping players happy with more free content.

There's also the season pass they're showing off right now, which looks to just be more Arcade stuff, boo.

Ragging aside, I enjoy the game, but not as much as I had hoped. There are plenty of awesome cinematic moments in there and some improvements are good, like the ease with which you can fly a chopper or plane.

If on the fence, I'd say wait a few months and buy it at a discount from a discounter if still interested. It's a fun game, but ehhh.
