As a first year teacher time is at a premium, and motivation often low. As a way of relaxing I have picked up the paintbrush for the first time in over a decade, and put paint to some orks in an un-orkadox colour scheme.
The blog below will remind me of my progress, and hopefully, if the community is willing, perhaps allow the community to give me some tips to improve my Boyz.
The 5 images are my test models

Edit: uploading photos using the dakka articles feature is not embedding the image so until I have it figured out, links will have to do

There are plenty more Boyz on the way, as well as the next series of steps in my first big project. The battlewagon!
I may be inheriting an emporer's children army from a cousin so the boyz could be joined by some humiez.
If anyone has any tips for fun models to paint for either army, please let me know.

I like unconventional orks, and these are some good ones! the painboyz grin works really nicely with the red.

Very minor thing, You've got some well painted boyz here, but i feel like the lighting in the pictures isn't really helping them

realism is a lie

I have nearly finished another group of 5 stormboyz.
Does anyone have any tips for making their rockets look more weathered, scorched etc, or have a link to a good tips thread on this.
Turtles, thanks, I will be looking into some different setups to hopefully do the boyz a bit more justice.

So my Orkses have gained some friends. I have inherited a Emporer's Children Army, which I will be painted as repentant and therefore loyalist to allow me to paint CSM and SM models (I dont have any intention of using them in games at the moment, so I dont have to worry about lists etc.)
Below are 5 more stormboyz for my waagh, though I am not as happy with these. The larger amounts of silver makes them look a little more drab, although as part of a whole waagh, where these models are spread out in a larger unit this is less of a problem.

I have also trialled some of the new Emporer's Children, these are trial models, and as such do not have the full level of detail as of yet, but below is a Nathaniel Garro model (headcanon where the fleeing Garro, warned by Saul Tarvitz led a group of emporer's children that had not fallen to chaos) alongside some raptors.

With the Easter Holidays over my painting has had to slow down, however I have some extra progress.
I have finished 3 bikes, 2 arms for my Deff Dredd, a gunner for my battlewagon and 5 more Boyz.
The details are not at the standard that I would want them to be at yet, but as my painting improves I will be going back and adding anything extra that I feel a model might need.

Thought id post an update on the full collection.
I have not been able to get in much painting in the last week work is busy, but what little I can do is progressing nicely.
I have a nice little waagh coming together, hopefully to the point where soon I could play my first ever game (albeit very low points)

I have, fully painted 12 boyz, 10 Nobz, 10 Stormboyz 4 Lootaz, 1 Mek, 1 Big Mek with SAG, 3 Bikes and a Painboy. With 5 more Boyz, a Deff Dredd and a Battlewagon nearing completion

So to explain my inspiration, and potential future plans. The idea for the colouring came from the bokoblins in breath of the wild, I figured itd make the orks look good, and having painted up my test models I agree. This combined with the looty nature of orks, and the propensity of my DnD's Orks for bright colours lead me to a varied metals/cloths scheme with a red skin.
I am wondering however whether it might look good to have my tougher boyz painted in the style of some of the tougher enemies in the game, newly acquired warboss with Black Skin or White Skin for example.

Once my painting has improved I am also going to experiment with adding some bodypaint, colour/design coded by unit role.
Thoughts?

This time of year has gotten super busy, but ive managed to crank out a warboss to lead my little mini waagh.
I will be thinking of a name for him in the coming weeks as well as painting some more of his boyz/toyz

I've been doing some base coating of my boyz, getting 20 more stormboyz ready to have their main colours added.
Theres 7 more Boyz coming on nicely, needing some highlighting and details, and about another 20-25 waiting for a basecoating, as well as some Kans, a Trukk and a Battlewagon which are coming on nicely but not close enough to post.
I have base-coated my House Orlock Gang and think that a war torn city style basing for the orks might work well, similar to the Warhammer TV toxic base theme, I like to think that rather than an all conquering waagh my boyz are fighting to destroy a hive city on their world, then build up for a bigger waagh

So in 5 months, I have picked up painting for the first time in 6 years, assembled, painted and documented myself a mini waagh. Getting my completed collection out so far made me realise how this is a good little accomplishment. The pile of grey is going down, and painted minis is going up.
Below is the entirity of what I have painted. Before summer break I am aiming to have at least 20 more models fully painted, so that I can spend some spare time in the summer improving some detailing, shading and possibly, attempting some basing. Points for the list are at around 850, by the end of summer I should be at about 1200-1500 and might (hopefully) be able to make 1750 by November when the codex is meant to drop and render this lil waagh massively sub-optimal

In waiting I have, a Dredd, 3 Kans, A Trukk, A Wagon 20 Stormboyz, 20 Boyz, 5 Nobz, 5 Burnaz and a painboy. It has kept me very busy, and could possibly be a very cheap way to get to a high model count 1750 list

So in short a busy time of year combined with someone thinking it would be a good idea to paint each individual rivet on a battlewagon
