Hello.

I'm starting a Word Bearers army, using the forgeworld miniatures from the Horus Heresy, but I'm also going to use them as a 40k Chaos army. However, I've seen the colour scheme differentiate quite a bit. Warhammer TV itself, has 3 different videos covering this scheme. Two of them the same, using Mephiston red as a base, and another one using Khorne red with highlights of Karak Stone. Why would they use two different shades of red? And which one would be the correct one? Personally I lean towards the Khorne red base, as I've always seen the Word Bearers as having a darker armor than the Blood Angels and Thousand Sons. Also, black or red shoulderpads? And when did this change during the Heresy from black to the red we see in 40k?

I hope that I can get some answers on this

On a side note, I would like you to refrain from the usual "do whatever you think is the coolest, it's your army, etc, etc, etc". I'm trying to do an armor that suits the fluff perfectly.

Cheers.

As far as the difference in shades of red and such go, I would like to quote a Word Bearer from the novel Fabius Bile: Clonelord:

"There were currently three hundred and forty-seven approved hues for battleplate among the Legion. That number changed, depending on the whims of the Dark Council."

So differences in red hues should not be too much of a problem. As for the shoulderpads colour changing from black to red, I'm not sure actually. I always painted mine red...

Edit: So this answer may be frustrating regarding which look is the correct one, because lorewise the correct look may vary.

Does the council just approve of any proposed shade of red, or have there been more than 347 shades of red proposed over the years and they kill the guy if they don’t like it?

Word Bearers are generally darker red than Blood Angels. That's honestly it. Paint them the shade of red you prefer. If this means dark red, wine red, just plain red or even a mix of shades for different units is up to you.

I don't think that the current paint schemes are accurate anyway, their armour is coated in blood, it should be much darker, like the old 2nd ed codex scheme. If I were to do word bearers, I'd start with rhinox hide, highlight with doombull and tuskgor, then use glazes of red ink to build up the red colour.
