Test mini tonight. Gonna dip these guys for speed and to seal in the decal. This guy took me about 90min excluding drying time. I did have to cut the decal, gather supplies and do a little research in that time. I think once I get going I can get it to 60min per mini. I have 200 to do. Heaven help me. What was I thinking buying all those?

60 minutes!

Try batch painting 10-20 at a time and it will speed things up. Anyone behind the front rank doesn;t need to look that great, you want them to look okay at arm's length and in blocks of troops. Second rankers no one sees anyway!

It'll speed up.... I hope. The longest part was cutting out that decal. I mean it's pretty cool but dang....

It’s the quick shade. Once it gets a matte coat it will look different.

Thanks Girthquake. I really can't take credit, Warlord Romans come with a waterslide decal. It's a pain to cut out for sure though. I'm nearly done with my legionaires. Looking forward to starting on their sheilds ASAP.

I feel your pain on this, I've a comparable sized EIR force I did a few years ago. My tip would be to work on some auxiliary units in between units of legionaries to help break the monotony (it's largely the same colour pallette, but when I did some Gauls the only silver was on helmet and weapon tips etc).

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

I'm looking at an EIR project for an upcoming ADLG tournament in June, all 15mm! So many legionaries.

If painting all those legionaries is too much, try modeling Legio XVII, Legio XVIII, or Legio XIX, AFTER the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Far fewer figures to paint!

Seriously, I understand the difficulties. I've a Warlord 28mm Macedonian Starter Army box to assemble (100 Pike, 8 Companion Cavalry, 1 Elephant), plus a box of 20 "Silver Shields" (Alexander's "Old Guard") and 2nd box of 8 Companion Cavalry. Have assembled and painted 1 test pike.

It's really not that bad. So far I've not gotten too fatigued and theyre basically done. The 300 American Civil War figures were far more difficult.

Base army painter barbarian flesh or maybe silver. Base shields with a SATIN brown prime to accept the decal better.

Your ability to crank models out quickly and with a reasonable paint quality is amazing. I'm glacial in comparison.

Maniac, BTW I looked at your gallery images. Man that samurai with the cherry blossoms was rad. Bold choice. Also really liked your BoltAction Americans machine gun unit. Fantastic.

@Ancestral Hamster. Make sure you post the progress of your Pike men! I would love to see them.

Yes. But only the remnants. Maybe 8 of 98. Never heard of them until I ordered them. To anyone who is looking. Little Big Man is SUPERIOR to Warlord transfers.

[EDIT]

Maniac I misunderstood... You didn't like Little Big Man? I really thought they were better.

First hobby day in months. A little headway on the trumpeters, aquilafers, centurions and optios.

I found them to be a pain to apply, and difficult to blend into the model. I generally prefer to hand paint my shields, but would prefer a more traditional decal to LBMS’s “stickers”.

I get why people like them, they just are not to my taste.

Regardless, still looking good. Glad to see you progressing.

What fancy carrying case do you have planned for these fellows?

Haha. They'll live in the same box as the Rebels and Yankees. For now....

Well, here's the Centurions, Optios, Aquilafers, Trumpeters and light ballista. Pre dip, so they'll look better tomorrow. Just wanted to get them off my table. I'm happy with them. Auxilliaries Praetorians Cavalry are next.

Well, other than the greenery on the bases, the Legionaires, Centurions, Aquilafers, Trumpeters and Optios are done. In my queue for the Romans are just 25 Auxilliaries, 12 Praetorians, 12 Cavalry, Caesar, MarkAntony, and Russel Crowe. I've ordered a 1/28th scale gladiator that I think will stand about 4.5" high which will be fun to field vs Fantasy armies in Kings of War (as a giant!).

Thanks Turtles.

Here's the whole group of completed Romans so far. Close to being done.

The Praetorians still need shields, basing and "the dip".

Finally here are 3 of 5 of the HQs. From L->R. Mark Antony, a Centurion, Russel Crowe from the movie Gladiator. Warlord Games name is "Unleash Hell."

Gotta finish these guys up. Hit the Cavalry, Julius Caesar, an Aquilifer, and the Giant and I can make a fortified camp for La Art de la Guerre and be done with em!
