After sharing this space marine terminator in a few places, I have been asked by some to write a guide on how I achieved such a result, and how to paint a dark atmosphere in general on to a model.
For starters I would like to say that this is not something a beginner can do, so some terms will come up in this guide that you may not understand. There are lots of guides on these techniques on the internet, so if you don't understand something there are many resources out there that can help you. I would also like to point out that this is just how I've done it, and there ceritanly are other, perhaps even better ways to do this, but this is just what I came up with.
The first thing I did is I mixed up a shadow colour. I used a dark blue colour, as the light from our sun is yellow and so creates a blue shadow. You don't have to use this particular shade. Feel free to add more black or purple into the mix.
Next I painted the model with a mix of my shadow colour and my base colour (screaming skull citadel paint in this case) to create a mid shadow colour.
With the whole model painted in this way I started planning out where I would position the lights. I put a flame coming out of a gas pipe on the base, and an imagined weak light hitting the model from behind. Although we are trying to create a model covered in shadow, having it not be iluminated at all would make for a boring monochromatic model. Even in darkness there must be contrast.
To show that a part of the model is iluminated I highlighted the areas hit by the light with my base colour (screaming skull). The fire iluminated the model more intensly, so a larger surface was highlighted than on the back, and the farther away from the source a part is, the less highlights it recives. I used a combination of wet blending, glazing and feathering to create the blends. For the shadows I used the pure shadow colour and glazing.
The parts of the model iluminated by fire recived an aditional highlight using pure white. To achieve a smooth transition I used glazing and feathering.
And finaly I coloured the white by glazing orange on top of it.
