Nice golden metal texture. How do you do that?
I also love the rinho skin... it's seems hard as hell

All these models are from Arena Rex, by Red Republic Games.

Acerbus the rhino was actually waaaaay easier than he looks. Lots of washes/glazes and repeated highlights helped me get close to that life-like texture I was shooting for. As for the gold metal... There are actually a couple different things I tried - which model are you referring to in particular?

Thanks - I appreciate the kind words. The models are so good that I've really pushed myself to improve so I can try to do them justice.

Awesome work and it looks like a great game!
Are you going to be doing all the characters for the game?
The two that instantly caught my eye were Proximus and Nero with riding Septimus! Wendigo came a close third!
Amazingly detailed and original models!

These are excellent, Gomez!
I especially like Acerbus and Leo. Besides the lovely skin/fur your handling of the eyes on both models really makes them come to life!
I can't wait for the guy on the giant Komodo Dragon to release, he is an insta-buy for me.

I've had my eye on Arena Rex minis for sometime now and you've done a cracking job on yours. I love the skin tone throughout, the Lion's skin in particular looks great - I salute you. Definitely a thumbs up

It really is a great game - easy to learn, elegant (and free!) rules, outstanding models... And yeah, I have a whole mess of models that I've been slooooooowly working on. I've been in since the beginning with the KS and have added to my pile since then (including Septimus and Nero - though starting to paint that bull intimidates the crap out of me, TBH).

Cheers - thanks for the feedback. I actually cheat like crazy on eyes in general, going mostly for just a bit of shading or black with a bit of white reflection (like on Acerbus). It's easy and while not very technical makes for a decent effect. Leo's eye is actually sculpted with a hole for the pupil, so all I did was paint the iris yellow.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I just went with Burnished Gold -> Shining Gold - > Chainmail, blending them together along the way and washing with some combo of Agrax Earthshade, Nuln Oil, and Fleshshade as I went. That layering might be where that texture you're seeing comes from. I usually have lots of highlight -> wash -> highlight again going on. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thank you!

Great paintwork. The non-historical elements make me twitch as a lover of gladiators, but the paintwork is stunning and the quality of the figures looks really nice.

Ha ha ha - I'm still working, but I am sloooooooow to get stuff finished. I'll post ASAP when I finish something for sure. I do have a WIP thread in the P&M subforum is you're interested in the process as well as the finished stuff.

Thanks! I have to admit that I was originally in the same boat as you and was disappointed when some of the fantastical elements started entering the arena during the Kickstarter. I loved the suggestion of mythology they had going with Septimus riding the bull Nero as an allusion to the minotaur, for example, without being an actual minotaur, but the minis and gameplay are so great that I've largely come around (I have Euryale the snake-lady in my painting queue as we speak!).

Very nice! Wasn't someone requesting more historical accuracy a little while back? That's, uh, pretty authentic (at least for historical greek wrestlers, not sure about the arena). Automatically Appended Next Post: Gotta say the Rhino kind of steals the show though.

Thanks! He definitely seems to be the most popular with people.
And Antaeus is part of the Hellenic faction, so he's supposed to be an actual honest-to-goodness Greek wrestler in the arena (hence, letting it all hang out there). I appreciate the feedback - thanks for looking.

Cheers, SC - that means a lot coming from you. They've certainly been a growth area for me, as I've tried lots of new techniques on them. (They've also been pretty intimidating due to their size and the quality of the sculpts.)

Thanks for the kind words, Stormatious - I appreciate the feedback. The rhino (Acerbus) seems to get the most comments, for sure...
