Chances of anything coming from Den of Geek are significantly better than a million to one
Set in Edwardian times, following a couple.
Rafe Spall (solid), Eleanor Tomlinson (solid), Rupert Graves (take him or leave him) and Robert Calysle (personal favourite) all feature.

Of course
Filming is now underway in Liverpool on the BBC's brand new adaptation of H.G. Wells' sci-fi classic, The War Of The Worlds
This version stars Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) and Rafe Spall (The Life Of Pi, The Big Short) as Amy and George respectively, and is set to bring a welcome 'twist' to the well-worn tale on the small screen, as the story will follow the couple as they face "the escalating terror of an alien invasion, fighting for their lives against an enemy beyond their comprehension" in Edwardian England! This should delight many fans of the source material.
Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, Once Upon A Time) and Rupert Graves (Sherlock) are also set to star alongisde Spall and Tomlinson in what is, quite surprisingly, the first British TV adaptation of the seminal novel.
Director Craig Viveiros (Rillington Place) remarked of the new, and more faithful, series:
“H.G. Wells' seminal novel has been adapted for the screen many times but it's always had a contemporary (and American) setting, this is the first version to be set in London and the Home Counties during the Edwardian period.”
As production kicked off, creator Harness also added:
"The version of The War of the Worlds that I wanted to make is one that's faithful to the tone and the spirit of the book, but which also feels contemporary, surprising and full of shocks: a collision of sci-fi, period drama and horror. There is nothing cosy or predictable about Wells’ novel, and that’s what I want to capture in the show. We have an incredible cast, a brilliant director and a wonderful crew - and I can’t wait for them to explode the terrifying story of the first alien invasion on to our screens.”
The War Of The Worlds will air on BBC One later this year, and it sounds like it's going to be a cracker

Could be good. I like the book, and I really like the Orson Welles radio version. I even heard an old radio interview once with both Orson Welles and H.G. Wells together.

I'm very excited for this.
Of course, one will expect some embellishment and addition to the central story. The book isn't overly long, and there's a lot more that could be explored around the narrator's necessarily narrow view of things

I'm glad that it's a period piece, but I hope they don't end up using the "following a couple as they blah blah" format as a way to cut the budget by having lots of scenes that are just them in rooms looking scared or confused, or talking about how they're scared or confused.

I'd probably love this as a movie ... maybe less so as a TV series. I'm really not into romantic interests in my SF at all.
I honestly look forward to it (the image above already has me sold as the set & costumes look pretty good).
Guess I'm learning to temper my excitement lately (unless a 2nd season of AC is announced ... whereupon I will seriously lose my gak...).

I think it's excellent that a story well over 100 years old is still inspiring new works based on it.

I'm pretty excited about this. This has always been one of my favorite works - I even really liked the Spielberg/Tom Cruise version, and of course, the TV show back when I was a kid.

Knowing that they are tinkering with the story up-front will allay the bickering later on. Having it vaguely follow the story is usually enough these days.
All-in-all, we'll be keeping an eye out for this.
As for the movie-type viewing, it's the BBC. It'll be a 3-part mini-series, and easy to skip the DVD/whatever to the next episode.

Why the bump forward in time? Did BBC wardrobe have lots of spare Edwardian costumes lying around from another production?
It wouldn't hurt to improve the book's weak mid section and Deus Ex ending.

Hopefully we have a sequel series where the humans use the Martian technology to invade Mars...
No, that would be too fun for the BBC.
...And when was the last adaption of a 2000AD series? :(

You know, for me this is all going to hang of how well the Martians are realised.
Get the spectacle of that right and the rest should fall into place.
