In 7th the Aegis Defence Line was a staple of infantry gun lines, but with the changes to cost, cover mechanics and AP mechanics, I'm wondering if the ADL is actually worth bringing in 8th. I'm primarily thinking about an Imperial Guard infantry gun line, but others can also be considered.

Perhaps a little off topic, but I'm also wondering how much infantry you could fit behind an ADL. Would 6 squads of 8 + HWT fit behind one set of 4 large pieces and 4 small, or would two need to be used?

No.

Blood Angels, Custodes, Tzeentch, Alpha Legion, Astra Militarum, Deathwatch, Thousand Sons, Imperial Knights, Tau, Genestealer Cult.

I have a problem.

Being contrary for the sake of being contrary doesn't make you unique, it makes you annoying.

With how terrain works now, unless its completely barren and you're basically playing on planet bowling alley, it's lost a lot of lustre given how much points your paying. Also, if you really want to protect key units, you're better off paying the extra points and putting them in a proper building instead. At that point though, you may as well take multiples of the unit you want to protect.

Probably work

I pulled mine out once this edition.

After I got the stuff I wanted that was under it in the box, I put it back.

Pretty much useless at present except as scatter terrain.

The only fortifications I really find useful are the vastly overcosted bastion as a gunbase, and the feculent gnarlmaw. The rest are straight up gak

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

The biggest thing that hurts the Aegis line is that it effectively decreases your opponent’s charge range by 1”, which is one of the last things you want as a gunline. And like other posters have said, it’s usually easy enough to find free sources of +1 save.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I had a fun game a while back where I just Castled 3 units of Havocs in an ADL with a Lord for re-roll ones, and an Apostle for morale mitigation. The rest of the army were Raptors and Oblits deepstriking all over the board and the list did very well.

I'm sure if my CSM gunline worked out, an Imperial list would work out even better.

I'm not sure any fortifications are worth it in 8th edition. I was recently given a Skyshield landing pad, but I'll most likely never actually play it. I did try out the ADL in one game, and it wasn't worth the points investment (of course, my opponent was running Orks, so go figure).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
