So if I take a space marine detachment and add a Custodes vexilla is my army no longer battle forged? I want to take a battalion detachment and add just a vexilla. Do I have to take him as aux detachment?

You're still Battle-forged, but you're no longer a 'pure' Space Marine detachment - you're Imperial (soup). You loose Chapter Tactics, Relics, etc.

If you mix detachments your soup. If you take a separate auxiliary you're all good.
Obviously you lose a command point, and an auxiliary won't unlock Custodes stratagems.

Not a Relic, as the first (free) Relic is only dependent on your Warlord, not on any detachment restrictions. Having a non-pure detachment means you don't get access to Stratagems (which which you could buy additional Relics).

If you add a Vexilla to an otherwise Space Marine detachment, yes, you will lose Chapter Tactics and Stratagems, but will still be Battle-Forged (as that only requires you to have all your units in detachments).
If you keep the Vexilla outside of any detachment, you are not Battle-Forged (and cannot partake in Matched Play, but can still play Open or Narrative).
Putting the Vexilla in an Auxiliary detachment will mean your Space Marine detachment keeps it's Chapter Tactics and Stratagems, and you stay Battle-Forged.

This has it right. It's a bit annoying but Relics, Chapter Tactics et. al. and Warlord Traits all have subtly different methods of unlocking them and who exactly can use them.

Minor correction. Battle-Forged requires all units to share atleast 1 faction keyword (Imperial) in this case.
Technically you can add an Eldar model to a Space Marine army. At that point you lose Battle-Forged.

Edit: Nvm, remembered wrong

No. 'Battle-forged' does not require all units to share a faction keyword, just that all units must be in a detachment. It's the rules for the detachments themselves that require all units in the detachment be from the same faction. It's also the separate 'Army Faction' rule which requires all units in an army share at least one Faction keyword in common, not the 'Battle-forged' rule.

Ok the list I was trying to build is at 1000pts. So having the extra CP from a battalion is still better even if I have to remove a CP by adding the aux detachment.
