Hey everyone,

I built a lightbox the other day, and it gave me the excuse to crack open my army cases and look at all of my stuff that i've completed over the years. I was trying to pick out my favourites to photograph, and actually found what I picked to be surprising! They were necessarily the most grandiose models, nor were they the best painted elements of my army. Now, i'm going to cheat in my own thread here by choosing two miniatures - but they both have this in common: They capture the essence of my army the best.

For those of you who don't know me, i'm an Ultramarines player. I thrive on making conversions and kit-bashing miniatures to have unique characters that fit the tone of my army. The two models i'll be sharing capture that essence the best for me. One is a sternguard sergeant, and the other is a captain. They aren't my best paint jobs, but they are two of the 'Ultramariniest' miniatures that i've ever produced.

So I open the invitation to all of you - what's your favourite miniature that you've ever made, and why are they your favourite? I'd love to see some cool figures, nostalgic stories and captivating reasons!

Here are mine:

Favorite miniature I've made... I've only sculpted and casted terrain. I'm not done any 28mm sculpts that I've liked much

I really enjoyed this piece:

Hey, cool! I'm a post-graduate classicist so I really dig that terrain piece. The WIP images give a cool sense of progression too.

It'd have to be this guy for me. Much like LDP's own picks, it's not the most technically impressive or the flashiest or even the coolest mini I've painted, but as a one-mini pitch for the somewhat idiosyncratic style I've worked very hard to hone over the last couple of years it's probably the best in my gallery. Dark, bloody and battered, Grimdark in the extreme, with an eye towards authenticity and a composition that achieves what so few of my little vignettes do, capturing a slice of the 40k universe in action.

The paint work isnt life changing but getting this from idea to sculpt to painted and in my hands was a really cool experience and gave me confidence that I didnt have before.

I think this diorama, despite it not being as well executed as some of my other work, maybe. First time playing with resin water. Really enjoyed scratchbuilding the boat and piranhas...

Carving the monolith glyphs was fun too.

That's a great looking piece Winterdyne.

Here's a few of my more extreme conversions. The paint jobs could have been better (as could the photography):

donor model is the Ing 54mm Daemon Huntress model

donor model is the Ing 54mm Damien 1427 model

donor model is the Soul Grinder. Note: I made this before the Plague Hulk came out & is what I use him as

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Great idea for a thread! Personally, my fav model is my legion praetor. I absolutely love the pose, to me he is full of energy and motion.there is real classic, over the top attitude in the pose

I also have a real soft spot for Badruk. First model I painted for someone from dakka!

Awesome! Already i'm stunned at the variety of stuff that's in here. I really should have expected it but its taking me by surprise all the same. From winterdyne's sensational diorama to San's characterful Praetor -- looks like an iconic IF

Krieg! What a hole...

Don't have other pictures of the completed model, but I do love my Grenadiers, and especially when they actually look like they're aiming down their scopes. The custom demo charge (a mortar shell and a flamer gas tank stuck together) is also a nice icing on the cake.

Found a picture of him. I owned the orignal Behemoth model and every time the legs broke I swore I was going to replace them. I finally got my hands of the Tanks! starter kit and did just that:

Here's my take on Lias Issodon. Didn't really have many sources to go off when making this so I was kinda just winging it. I'm happy with the result though, I just wish I could make him a bit brighter but that would go against everything he's about.

Also want to show a couple of Devastator Sergeants I came up with. All just kitbashed, the only non-GW thing there is a bit of guitar string on the right one's Auspex.

Here's a closeup of one of them. I've tried to paint the wrist-screen to resemble Facebook, I'm pretty happy with that, I'm sure people can see what it's supposed to be.

Also I'd like to share the Chaplain I kitbashed a while ago, shown here with Lias.

Ignore the paintjob, I've improved it since. I like the idea that he's gently reaching out, as if offering redemption or peace to his foes before he charges in.

For sure this House Degallio Knight. Painted for a client who became a good friend. His enthusiasm for the fluff and his love of custom parts just be unique without being outlandish is always solid. He provided the fist and missile launcher. I did the painting and base.

He wanted a "wading out of the ocean and onto the beach" vibe and it was my first foray into water effects. I think it works! I really love painting Knights and have done many over the years, but this one always stands out as my favorite because the white/yellow/black color scheme is so strong and I love Degallio's iconography and fluff.

My two favorite miniatures to date:

Captain Aedus Sendini, Keeper of the Arsenal, Commander of the Blood Angels 5th Battle Company; the Daemonbanes.

And the Blood Angels Epistolary Librarian attached to the Daemonbanes:

I enjoyed everything about both of these miniatures. The parts assembly, planning, posing, painting and end result on both was just a fun process.

Thanks for looking.

Lips, by the way, your Ultramarines Captain is still to-date my all time favorite UM Captain model I've seen. Lovely conversion and an amazing paint job as well.

Take it easy.

Probably one of the top two captains, although I am quite fond of the bike one as well. I’ve got other favorite minis, but some gain that status more from nostalgia, and less from my paint work.

Lots of nice stuff in this thread.

@Red_Thirst thank you so much! Hence why he's my pick for my favourite as well Your guys are characteristic Blood Angels and look really slick! I see why you're proud of them.

In fact, everyone's posts on here are really great. This is turning out to be quite the wholesome thread

This Vanguard Marine ist one of my favourites, because I tried glazing every panel and i like the overall dynamic of him jumping to start the jetpack.

For my Deathwatch it'd be two of my Stalker bolter marines.

The Griffon Rampant because the adjusting his scope pose ended up working better than i'd ever hoped and the Raptor because I feel like I nailed what the chapter is all about from the folded stock attached to his back packright down to the punch knife on his left arm.

For my Crimson Tears it's a difficult choice, but i think my not-Mephiston takes it :

Spoiler:

He's levitating slightly because I knocked him out in the glory days where he'd use Wings of Sanguinius and swoop over battlefields wrecking armies almost on his lonesome.

Most of the rest of the stuff I paint is built pretty stock, so not that relevant for this thread.

Eldarin - that's inspired!

stevefamine - I love that table of yours, the hihglighted piece is great.

Zach - that's a rally great sculpt, the horse is super creepy.

wintedyne - I've seen that diorama around on the interweb and I didn't know that was yours, but seeing your name attached it makes a lot of sense. Astonishing work.

em_en_oh_pee - I can scarcely credit that that's the first time you used a water effect, it looks incredible.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Woof, this thread has some amazing modeling and painting work! I'm especially a fan of Eldarain's Daemon Prince!

My favourite model I've ever made would have to be my Khorne Daemon Prince, Christened 'Fluffy - Slaughterer of the Golden Angel' after he punched Dante's lights out in his first game:
