My regular gaming opponent is a big fan of buying already-painted models, and has acquired a force of 30k Sons of Horus.

So, having agreed to put together a force to play 30k with him, and being the sort of fool who wants to paint all his own models, I now have to get cracking on that.

When I saw the model of Dorn I knew I wanted to play Imperial Fists, and their special detachment with lots of shields appeals as it will make it a bit more different from all my 40k marines.

So, I have stuck together my first 5 breachers:

And painted a Primaris (first marine I had to hand) as a colour test:

My aim is for quite a bright yellow, but heavily weathered. I think it's nearly there, need to work on the sponge weathering a bit to avoid getting such big splodges.

Any advice on painting or army lists?

Umm, what? Legion rules for Imperial Fists add +1 BS when firing bolter weapons, and they ignore pinning tests when in a fortification. Oh, and they always have to challenge in close combat. The RoW's of the Imperial Fists allow Breacher Squads as troops, adds some nifty shield rules, and the other one is more about deepstriking and assaulting. If anything, the Imperial Fists are all about Breacher, Warder, Terminator and Templar Brethren squads due to the Solarite Power Gauntlet and Vigil Pattern Storm Shield wargear. Imperial Fists don't really specialize in one area like some of the other Legions do.

You might be thinking Iron Warriors and their (cough, cough) broken RoW for artillery and the bonuses they receive for taking a Warsmith.

Indeed, and even to quote the 1d4chan page on it; 'The Imperial Fists are here to demonstrate how "to be vanilla" can potentially mean "to be the best".'

Anyway, I think the Fists are pretty good, well rounded marines. Good for Assault and Defense. Arguably an easy force to start by using one of the BaC or BoP Boxes and doing the Pride of the Legion RoW (do people still hate seeing that one?), their Veteran Tacticals will be BS5 with Boltguns and the Suspensor Web Heavy Bolters and their Terminators can be upgraded to have Deep Strike out side of needing a special Chapter Tactic. Additionally they can take Stormshields (at the cost of their gun) or the Prototype Assault Cannons.

As a good first 30K army, it's hard to beat Imperial Fists. They are just all around good. Now, when you start delving into the other Legions and some of the stuff they can specialize in, then the Imperial Fists start to look a little lack luster.

I don't mind seeing Pride of Legion, but when I see it from the same player over and over and over because they refuse to change their army, and then get upset when you change your army and walk all over them... yeah...

A new player in 30K can't go wrong getting a couple BaC or BoP sets, and using Pride of the Legion. Wonderful introduction into 30K.

Thanks for the input, all

My next purchase will be a Calth box I think, to get the core of my army sorted out.

I tend to do nothing without at least a cup of coffee in the morning, so I totally get it.

Both BaC and BoP are great values, and form the core for a lot of 30K armies. Those two boxes saved 30K.

Got the first 5 Breachers mostly done, just the weathering and bases to go:

Looking good! What's up with the bases? Is that an insert for round lip bases you added to 35mm bases?

Have you settled on an army list and Rite of War yet?

The bases are Dark Arts "Imperial Palace" resin ones, cast in one piece.

I am planning to use the IF specific rite of war that favours shields
