Has 40k lost its way?

We're still in the first year of a new edition which has radically changed how GW are balancing and updating the game, so I don't think 40k has lost its way so much as 8th edition is still finding its feet.

Nope.

Also perfectly fine with them trying to constantly shake gak up.

watching certain groups squirm is hilarious to me.

The character targeting rules, lack of force org, strategems, soup, cp spam. These are all hardcore flaws in the game that are being "fixed" by migrating back to old paradigms.

I wouldn't call that "finding its feet"

If anything they've unjumped the shark.

8th edition has plenty of issues for sure, but as a company GW are doing infinitely better in my eyes than they have for a long time.

Absolutely, some completely optional beta rules intended only as "recommendations" for competition play have completely destroyed the foundation upon which the entire 40k hobby sits.

After all, and I think I speak for all of us in this, the only reason we got into the game in the first place was because of spam and turn 1 ganks.

Wich old paradigms are those? And are they necesarily bad?

I think GW was more lost at the end of 7th with 40k than it is now.

It's just the opposite from my pov. GW has doubled down on the "lets jerk em around" technique of "fixing" "mistakes".

Good stuff!

Too bad turn 1 ganks and spam is what is being a addressed almost a year later. 8th is THE SPAMGANKER edition.

I would say the game is still improving. This beta change is a step back. But only because of AM's existence. Once GW figures out how to balance AM this game will be in fantastic shape.

Most successful/popular edition ever.
GW profits surging.
GW releases continuous and for many different ranges.
Most balanced edition ever.

GW are smashing it right now. The FAQ is one of the best things they have ever done, imo. So glad they're trying to tackle spam and soup, the bane of this edition.

I agree here as well... So tired of souping and i'm glad they've made the pure detachments only rule.

TBH the salt does not surprise me. I still have this instinctive kneejerk negative reaction to almost anything GW does leftover from "the dark days".

I find that a good curative to this bias is to have a sit-down, a cup of tea, and a good hard read of ALL the primary source materials before formulating an opinion on the "new bad thing".

Sometimes I still disagree with the direction things go, but on the whole, GW have made a lot of smart decisions with 40k in the last year.

The AM hate is palpable, and as an AM and Scion player I am liking this ruling, as well as the ruling for battle bros. Cheaper Commissars are nice too. These rulings are pretty much getting rid of the utter ridiculousness of some of the lists that I was seeing things like a celestine, 3 elysian mortars, and a Guilliman in a single detachment. Maybe I just play with tournament players too much but I regularly get stomped by all kinds of alpha strike cheese and deepstrike shenanigans. Having 3 units of berserkers in your face turn one, unkillable cultists, an army of shield captains, etc.. Also Im terrible so that may play into that.

Really the game has not had turn one deepstrike for a while with the exception of drop pods so it's not like deepstriking on turn 2 is something new.

I almost forgot to mention. I was actually hoping that Infantry Squads would go up to 5 points a model and they would ad a 2pt premium to deepstrike Scions. The codex needs more internal balance and such changes would make more incentive to take veterans, conscripts, and scions in transports, since currently at their price point there is no reason to diversify your forces or pick a unit for the job you want instead of taking the cheaper more efficient unit and hoping it does that job too.

I second, third, and fourth this.

There are maybe two or three factions that have legitimate concerns that still need to be worked on. There are four other factions that have taken a tiny, almost insignificant nerf due to the FAQ, and there are the rest that have become more balanced or more powerful as a result.

But the great thing is that we've had less than 48 hours at this point to actually see how the rules will affect lists and gameplay. That doesn't seem like a lot of actual playtesting time to me, but watching people squirm and flail and claim the sky is falling, or say they're swearing off of 40k forever, is a great bit of drama to watch. It's like a soap opera. A 'soup' opera.

It'll take another several months for things to properly digest. New netlists will come out of tournaments. People will buy new models to fill in the gaps of their army. Everything will be fine, and then the next FAQ will hit and everyone will freak out again.

It's not even close to being most balance and new faq made things more unbalance.

Most of the ridiculous stuff out there is being curbed. The game is returned to a more "narrative" feel without being a narrative game. I.E. Armies fighting armies, taking objectives! It is after all a simulation wargame!

GW have not jumped the shark. This is a "living system" now. That means we get these changes to rules and points costs. The reason? To slowly adjust the game and prevent it from becoming stuck like it used to be. If a unit is too many points for you now or as rule has changed, find something else to replace it in your list. It's about keeping the game fresh. We all have to adapt.

With 40k, I don't know.

AoS is a different story: Over there, they've not only jumped the shark but the aelf-sea-monkey-witches are not only jumping the shark, they're jumping over other sharks while riding sharks themselves.

Oh, and leaping turtles over those sharks, too.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
