My current tournament DA/AM iteration was somewhat affected by the FAQ's. My three dark talons now cost 120 points extra, and I can no longer bring six full squads of mortar heavy teams. Nevertheless the list is still basically intact, nothing was dropped, just some minor adjustments made here and there to accommodate the changes. Luckily the FAQ made the devastator squad with the heavy bolters and armorium cherub pretty fantastic, so that was a nice boost. The list is fairly self explanatory: Azrael castle of hellblasters and devastators being given re roll all hits, re roll 1's to wound, 4+ ancient extra action, and darkshroud -1 to hit, being screened by cheap guardsman and supported by the air wing detachment of dark talons. The scouts are slightly less needed now due to the nerf to turn 1 alpha strikes, maximum early board control isn't such a necessity. But they are still dirt cheap, fulfill the battalion, and are still great objective grabbers/holders.

Lol the crazy thing is I actually still think they are worth it, they are just THAT good. Basically I can't imagine playing DA in 8th without them. To me they're the unit that makes you want to jump into DA right now. Sammael bike lists are fun, with talonmasters and all that, but not super competitive. Deathwing has suffered the same mediocre fate as pretty much all terminator variants. If you're interested in running vanilla green wing, why, when UM or RG would just be better. For my money in 8th, the only reason I'm playing DA competitively is for wftda + hellblasters and dark talons.

Could you take IG relic with a DA warlord?

Yes, the Heavenfall Blade represents the free relic for the Warlord's detachment, but because I have a detachment of pure AM I can use Imperial Commanders Armoury Stratagem for 1 CP to purchase another one, the Aquila, for the Company Commander.

So here's the new list given I miscalculated the severe points hike on the dark talons. I actually like it better oddly enough, I end up with more lascannons. I was hemming and hawing over cutting the darkshroud or the ancient, I couldn't bring myself to cut either, as a castle list both are basically essential. Then I realized the scouts aren't doing that much anymore, first turn charges aren't a thing under the new rules, so I don't need the scouts specific forward deployment to create more of a null zone for deep strikers. I can drop them completely, swap the DA into the spearhead, complete the dirt cheap AM battalion, and use all the infantry on the first turn to just move up and board control any deep strikers on turn 2. The freed up points allowed me to cover the extra cost of the dark talons, fill out the AM battalion, and even pick up two additional lascannons on the devastators. I'm not going to say the dark talon nerf didn't hurt, it did, but I still really like the look of this.
