Hi all,

Firstly, What arm do studded shoulder pads go on? Do they go on the left and then the chapter mark switches to the right? or do they go on the Right? Why?

I am thinking of making a Dark Angels primaris force where every model has a studded shoulder pad. I just like the look of them. Is there any place to get them for less than 2$/shoulderpad? Official ones? Second hand?

Anyone use the studded shoulderpads from pop goes the monkey?

Me?

Typically studded pads are associated with Mk. V and VI armour where they go on the left and the chapter pad on the right.

Haven't used those pads from PGtM specifically, but have used others. What do you want to know?

Ya know

this always confused me too.

some art depicts them on the right taking up the squad marking

offical models have them on the left like the Mk6 armor (?) on forge world.

if you are going for "historical" accuracy id follow whatever official build pictures they have going. otherwise do what you think would look best/easiest.

There are a bunch on shape ways for fairly affordable prices though i cannot confirm the quality

The original is that the studded pad goes on the left. This was based on people generally being right handed and therefore the better quality pad was used to protect the right shoulder/arm. The cheaper studded pad was then used for the off hand.

This of course now makes no sense as marines are entirely ambidextrous, and also with a 2 handed hold on the bolter it means that the left shoulder is more likely to be toward the enemy and therefore liable to need better protection. The Tau firewarriors kit does follow this approach.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

See, I always saw it the other way around.

The studs were bonded to the pad to increase its strenght and protection, and because of right handed dominance, the left shoulder would face towards the attackers as they advanced whilst firing their bolters.

Not from what I recall. The studs were used to bond together multiple layers of inferior armour as a make-do approach when resources were scarce in the Heresy.

Hence the unstudded pad was actually superior. I'll need to check me compendium when I get home though.

That's the explanation behind all the Big Honking Rivets on the Mk 5 Armor, was that it was easier to field repair that way.
