Where abouts? Advise for London or Glasgow would be very different.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

The biggest Warhammer events in the UK are held at London, Coventry and Nottingham (IIRC). There'll be lots of smaller events run by individual shops, clubs, etc. depending on where you live exactly and how far you're willing to travel. But all in all, I'd say there's a healthy amount of wargaming across the country and there should always be some kind of campaign, tournament or event going on within easy driving distance.

Nottingham seems to have become a silicon valley sort of hub for miniature games. GW moved up there to get out of London prices and over time they've spawned Mantic, Wargames Foundry, and others. So if that's your passion, and if you have freedom on where to go, it might be worth looking at.

Hi spree ,

As a born and bred Londoner but married to a Scandinavian and with various Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish friends, my advice to you is to be prepared for some serious culture shock. The UK is very different to what you are used to, your If you think the swedish are multicultural you are in for a serious shock in a good way ;-) . A move to the UK should be one based on long-term prospects and goals, do you have a career/job in mind? Is your goal to work in the Miniatures/wargaming scene? Do you want to live in a vibrant never sleeps city where your rent on a box apartment is way over 3/4 of your take home pay or a more humble town place with a similar feel to home?

Wargaming wise , London has a thriving community pretty much all over, unless you have actually been to London it's very hard to understand how large it is.
It's not just about the physical size, London is densely populated, when someone says they live in London ... they could easily live over 2 hours by car in traffic away.

As such there are a lot of players, but also a lot of clubs too from big events and clubs, run In central London event spaces to the smaller clubs with more casual vibes , we have the people who run the London GT https://www.lgtpresents.co.uk/40kgt , who run a Gaming club in a Covent Garden club , complete with bar every Monday night, with event-level terrain and regular competitions. To groups of People using apps like https://www.meetup.com/ or facebook for the organization of matches and or events.

This is before you factor in all the smaller clubs I found my regular club through facebook,.... When I say smaller we're running our own 50 person event in May ... and regularly have 20 gamers of a normal club night , We are also blessed with hundreds of Games workshops / Warhammer stores, large Independent stores like dark sphere and smaller ones too.

It's not a huge country and public transport is pretty good, so Living in London doesn't rule you out of attending events in Nottingham, for instance.

It also depends on what games you want; there's some drastic local variation.

Nottingham has Warhammer World, so if you play GW games, you've got a bespoke centre with lots of GW only events. But it also has Foundry, which hosts Oldhammer events and others.

Warlord has a largish store with gaming space, but has nothing on Warhammer World.

To be brutally honest; if the only reason you want to move to the UK is for the hobby, I'd seriously reconsider. If you're moving anyway and deciding where, or trying to get a job in the industry (which means you need to be in Nottingham), then it's different.

It's more ubiquitous here in that most people have heard of Warhammer, and most large population centres have stores (which may or may not have tables) and clubs, it's not as popular a past-time as you might think.

U.K is a good place to move for events, Nottingham hosts the G.Ts and there is plenty of events in London.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

Like how people describe foundry as being in Nottingham when it isn't, it's 30 mins by train from nottingham just to Newark then you'd have a good walk or taxi to the village it's at.

Games Workshop does have a lot of events but they sell out fast, mostly. On non event days the tables are free to use and a Warhammer World is awesome but at weekends it gets booked up often months in advance unless you hang around waiting fir no-shows.

A brutal reality is that Nottingham may be the lead belt but in Nottingham itself there is no dedicated independent wargaming store, most nearby ones are in the closer towns. If you like GW, Mantic, Warlord , then you are sorted

Unless Brexit looks like it is going to make it hard to visit the UK, unlikely, then I'd stick to arranging the occasional planned visit - you could do a week and get Salute, Warhammer World, Mantic , foundry etc

Job wise, most of the full time stuff gaming related is specialist stuff like rules, design, manufacturing. Without experience in them then it's largely part time and temp stuff that even then attracts a lot of applications.

I'm lucky in that I do live close to Nottingham but I wouldn't put the benefits on a "I'd move country" scale. Nottingham public transport is terrible, it's congested, it's slow, it's expensive. Tram from one of Nottingham to the other can take an hour. Car parking is expensive , restricted and congested at peak times.

Thanks for all reply, those really made me consider more. Traveling times are not really a problem for me, but the working in the UK is still worrying. Currently, I m un-employed, but I m studying business management, and I ve been planning to open my own store.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, before moving, I might come to holidays to visit UK. Is there any big independent games stores in London area?

Darksphere is a big London independent. If you are thinking of opening a gaming store, I'd strongly suggest that you don't. They don't seem to do well here, you won't get a big enough location to do it well in city centres, meaning it's industrial estates and then you have to battle to get people coming to you. Add the expense in money and time of relocating to a foreign country and it's a massive undertaking into a very difficult and small market. (Apologies for the assumption if this is not the direction you intend for your store.)

That said, if you do decide to come over and want to look around what Nottingham has to offer, I'd be more than happy to show you some of the sites

That would be super, I really have no connections to UK, and would be happy to meet some folks who play games.
