I just found out about this game, and it looks amazingly fun. Never had much urge to play autoduel games as they never really clicked with me, or they were very old-school in feel like Car Wars, which sometimes really.... isn't for the best, lol. Gaslands reminds me a lot of Outrider, but the card-laying aspect instead of templates for movement in Outrider looked a bit clunky for me to get my more casual friends to play.

I think this game might have caught me this time, though. Looking online I see that there are some really sweet Hot Wheels cars that are themed as Star Wars characters/ships, and with careful selection and different paintjobs and guns to not look as "Star Wars" I think they could make some really cool sci-fi cars as opposed to the usual junked post-apoc fare, and a good number of them already have some simplistic guns attached.

I'm currently brainstorming some sci-fi terrain that could along with the cars that could give a feel of the open-world vehicle combat I used to love from my days of Borderlands on the Xbox.

Yeah, I've got the rule book, and I am going to be out of commission for a few weeks shortly after some surgery, so my project to preserve my sanity is to get enough vehicles and maybe terrain ready to be able to demo it at my club once I'm back up and running.

The trouble I'm finding is that the rules combined with the huge amount of 1:64 vehicles out there provides such overwhelming choice I'm struggling to narrow down the concepts I want to start with.

I mean, I've ordered a cheap truck and trailer from China to form the basis of an Optimus Prime War Rig, and I've found sufficient models to constitute the basis for a Bat-vehicle list, but every time I look on eBay for vehicles I just get a whole bunch of new ideas and end up not pulling the trigger on any of them!

I have played one game so far-- three players (including my 8-year old son), with one identical car each. We played a death race on a figure eight track, and only one of us finished. It was pretty fun, and I suspect it will play much faster if/when I can find time to play again. Check out the Gaslands FB group for a lot of insane Hot Wheels/Matchbox conversions.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

My group's been playing a good amount of Gaslands, and it always draws a lot of lookie-loos at the LGS. So much so, in fact, the manager dropped by and was really smitten and ordered a bunch of books.

It's a greatly fun game. My biggest suggestion is to remember it is a cinematic game and not a simulation, so just keep things like Mad Max and Fast & Furious in mind, and you'll have a great time. It plays a lot faster than Car Wars, but still gives you lots of great options, and their take on the flight path system a la X-Wing is really well done.

It's been a while since we've had that much laughing and just outright fun on game nights.

Ride eternal, shiny and chrome!

Edit: The worst part is I can't stop buying Hot Wheels when the damn grocery store has them for a buck a piece. I have far more cars than I will ever get around to modding at this point. But, still on the hunt for a good Monster Truck and War Rig.

They're available for sale from the Gaslands site, or there's a PDF download of the various results you can print and stick to standard D6 if you want to diy it.

Or you can simply remap the normal D6 results, 1 for Hazard, 2+3 = slide and spin and 4+ = Shift.

I'd probably want something visual on the dice though, as my ageing brain needs the least amount of calculation possible these days.

Yeah, you can get them direct, or there's a couple of places that now do them. They're actually listed as "Friends of Gaslands" on the gaslands.com SHOP page. Many of them also make templates, terrain, weapon bits, etc.

But yeah, our first few games we just used standard d6. It's not too difficult to remember, but having the actual skid dice is a lot more fun. I got mine from https://www.etsy.com/shop/thomaswynnstudio which may be a great option for those in the US.

Generally don't need more than 5 skid dice, since most cars have handling of that or less. I like having some extras, though, so I can plop down the "automatic" ones from various maneuvers (Hazard/Shift) just for easier reference. Also, there are a couple of perks that could increase handling, but 5 will cover most situations. I got 2 sets anyway, so I have 10, which is definitely more than enough. But now I want blue ones, and red ones, and whatever else that etsy shop makes in dice colors...

It's surprisingly fun (and addictive) modding Hot Wheels/Matchbox. Definitely get a game in, though, it's super fun. We even made some explosion/wreck markers using tea lights and polyfill with a little black spray paint.

Nice pic! I am building some of those tea light burning markers, too. Looks great.

I'm probably just going to start out making my own cardstock templates and dice (lots of experience stickering dice for print and play games, and I have a batch of blank ones from another project), and if we really have fun I will hit the Etsy stores for the engraved dice and plastic templates, as they are actually really well priced for the quality.

I personally am going for a print copy, as they only run 12 bucks on Amazon, and I have Prime.

Also saw a couple of the Star Wars cars in the flesh at a store today, and they are really sweet looking.

Yeah, our first few games were with printed out templates and regular dice. Works just fine. You can download the movement templates in a PDF (just make sure to print at Actual Size, not scaled to fit) from the downloads section at gaslands.com, cut 'em out and stick on cereal box or whatever.

I wasn't sure if I was going to go all in after getting the book on Amazon ('cause Prime and it was dirt cheap), but after a couple of games it quickly became an obsession.

Yeah, when I saw the plastic templates being sold for less than 20 dollars, I assumed I would eventually get a set, lol.

We've played twice at the club now. I really like the rules, which are a touch crunchier than I usually like, but work very well.

Our only problem seems to be that we keep over-estimating how long a game will take to reach a certain point and the general surviavability of the cars. None of our races have made it to the finih line before a reasonable time or before carnage determines the winner. Not that this is a bad thing necessarily, just something to consider.

Very fun game, but my advice is whatever size track you setup, Shrink the overal area and halve the number of obstacles you think you'll need.

Here's the AAR's for the first...

... and second games we played.

Appologies for the un-modified cars in the first post. We had gotten our act together and used properly tarted-up vehicles for the second!

I agree that repainting Hot Wheels is good cheap fun. I was in a real hurry before the second game so here's a pair of Hot Wheels that I did up quick with spray paint, paint markers and dirty brown wash. I did take the time to drill out the rivets though and strip the paint off the metal bodies with MEK. It's sometimes surprising how much good detail is hidden under those thick toy paint jobs. No other mods to these besides paint.

Yeah, it's absolutely possible to have massive pile ups before anyone even gets to the first gate in a Deathrace. I've actually found the Arena of Death to be a little more friendly for first scenario than Deathrace, since you won't immediately be in each other's gill and have to worry about how collisions work before your weapons go hot.

Also, Audience Votes make a BIG difference in a lot of situations, so I highly recommend using those.

Great reports eilif.
One thing that I've been wondering about ever since i saw then is what are the little v shaped cuts in about half the templates?

Those are for placing the Slide template in the event you wind up with an un-cancelled Slide. That will make sense once you have read the rulebook. It's actually pretty clever.

Edit to add video showing a little bit of their use.

I've seen folks in the FB commenting that they've played with their kids around that age, possibly just using fewer of the Perks (which are just special skills for the most part) to reduce overall complexity. Depending on how much other gaming your kid has done, they might be just fine with those, too. The "basics" of using the maneuvers and skid dice and even doing damage and stuff is pretty straight forward, really.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, also... because it's really cool... here's a fan-made app (which the creator supports and even has links to on the main site) for creating vehicles. Of course, without the rules you won't know what the Perks do, but definitely usable and fun.

I think a 10 year old who was used to gaming could do it, but I wouldn't suggested it as a first wargame. There's a fair bit to keep in mind.
The notches indicate where you place the square skid template. If you roll poorly you end up sliding out of your curves or spinning out at the end of your move.

What the heck is the point of the touch it use it rule?

The idea is that you can't pick up one guestimate and then pick up another. I think there's a similar rule for other template games like X-wing and such but I could be wrong.

It is worth noting to those who don't know that this is one of those games where you need to be reasonably good at guestimating distances and spatial relationships. There is no pre-measuring or partial movement in this game.

Yeah, it's more of a "no premeasuring" kinda thing. Everyone I've seen on the FB group goes a little more with "once you declare which template you're using, you can't change it" and even the creator mentioned the intent really is more to prevent people from constantly swapping in and out templates to pick the "best" one.

Edit: The same effect is in X-Wing, really, since you have to set your maneuver dial without picking up and "testing" the move before committing.

So what is the best product to strip the factory paint off of diecast cars? Or should I prime right over the factory paint? I have actually never painted diecast models before.

If you're willing to drill the rivets out (Actually quite easy with a hand drill or dremel) you can drop the metal bodies into a jar of MEK. Then after a day in the the MEK, take it out, let it sit for a minute (the evaporating of some of the MEK helps the stripping) and scrub the paint off with a wire brush while wearing sovent resistant (I use green Solvex) gloves.

MEK is very harsh (it's the active ingredient in professional plastic cement) but it's cheap and it's the only thing I know that reliably strips the enamel from metal car bodies. For priming the bodies you can use whatever, but I prefer to use krylon Camo ("with fusion tech for plastic") sprays as they are some of the only paints that stick well to the polypropylene that many of the other sections of the cars are made of.

I really prefer de-riveting the cars because it gives you access to the inside of the car and lets you remove the windows before painting.
