So about 2 months ago I stumbled into the hobby of painting miniatures. In search of a decent collection of figs to keep me occupied, I grabbed a Start Collecting box of Space Wolves. Now 3 of my friends have also bought armies and we're just finishing up our painting. We're all noobs who bought everything that looked cool, so there probably not going to be much deep strategy, but I'd appreciate any tips, suggestions on how best to play. My 3 friends armies are Death Guard, Primaris Ultramarines, and Necrons. Here's mine.

Are you looking for help with the list or help with strategies for the use of this list? I would assume by you having just gotten into the hobby that you own all that is listed. Do you have anything else? Just trying to get a baseline before giving my advice

My input for playing index wolves...

HQ
Bjorn rules.
Wolfguard Battle leaders go well with bjorn to add reroll to wound on top of his refills to hit.
Rune priest is costly and if you want a psyler, Njall in tea is the best route.
If you have enough mechanized units. Iron priesta are great too.
I also toy with Arjac now and then.

Troops
I tend to use basic 5 man grey Hunters or sometimes I add a wolf guard pack leader with combi plasma. Either way, they get razorbacks with twin assault canons. This is the current meta pick for SW troop selection.
I also like primaris intercessors with auto bolt rifles, as they do very well marching forward in bjorn and the wgbl’s bubble of rerolls.

Elite
Wulfen RULE (I run leader with claws and either 2 hammer and shield and 2 axe, or all 4 hammer and shield
Wolf Guard Bikers also rule. I almost always include 5x bikers with storm bolters and storm shields. This unit shoots a LOT and really really benefits from the reroll bubble.
I really like Ben dreadnoughts with shield and ace as well as Murderfang here too.
There are other great uses for wolf guard packs in this section too. Foot slogging and or jump pack setups can both be very fun. I find the terminator variants unreliable this edition.

Fast Attack
I am not a fan of this section at all honestly. Don’t like the blood claw stat lines for sky and swift claws. I don’t like Thunderwolves that much, as wulfen do just about everything better than they do, for less points AND they can outflank turn 2 for one CP
Cyberwolves are probably the most useful unit here to screen.

Heavy support.
Long Fangs with lascanons
Long Fangs with plasma canons
Other options are inferior mostly.
I will run my relic leviathan dreadnought sometimes here.

Fliers
No sir. I don’t like ‘em. Too expensive.

Transports
Razorback with Assault canons and Storm Bolter for troops.
Razorback with TL Lascanon maybe for long Fangs.
Rhino with 2 storm bolters (3 if Forgeworld style) if you want to press bigger grey hunter squads forward.

The only way I like running bloodclaws is if I am outflanking a big 15 man squad with heroes into enemy backline along with my wulfen.

Good luck. (FOR RUSS!!!)

Also, since Thunderwolves (the wolf not the rider) are really good at ahreddong infantry, if I do run TWC, I never run them with the pricey stuff like shield and hammers. Give them power swords (or chainswords) and bolt pistols and use them to smash into incoming hordes of melee units. On the charge they can really pummel some light infantry. I think it’s the only thing they can actually do better than wulfen, and you save a lot of points.

Both actually. I have purchased all of these and have no issue picking up more. Basically I've bought 2 Start Collecting boxes, a venerable dread, a skyhammer box, a wulfen box, a rhino, a stormfang and a fenrisian wolf pack so far. I'm open to purchasing more, though I'd rather keep additions around or below $200. I was about to buy a second army to start painting (Dark eldar/ harlequin or T'au. Undecided). Mostly I bought things that looked fun to paint and it's turned into a new game night heh.

Thank you for the excellent breakdown. I took rune priest so i could have something to do in the psychic phase and because I wanted to try making a hood out of epoxy clay. I made him by cutting up a bunch of parts and I was proud enough of the result.

Fenrisian Wolves suck but they were cheap and I figured they'd be a good screen for Bjorn. Was thinking of modifying them I to cyberwolves maybe.

I debated making swiftclaws but couldn't seem to find a pack. Is this a kitbashing unit?

Many other questions but break is over heh

Ultimately you should take what you want it's your army, your money, and your time ... that being said losing isn't always fun. It's seems we are similar in that we like to play with the models we paint and convert simply because we like them not necessarily because they are the best choice. Try to find a happy medium between the two.

As for some of the things you talked about above and your list.
Bjorn is awesome but pricey in smaller lists.

Lonwolves are kind of a waste.

Fenrisian wolves can be good in large packs especially when supported by Canis wolfborn and Harald deathwolf. Harald is a lot of points but he is amazing. I converted mine from a normal thunderwolf kit.

Swiftclaws are just spacewolf bikers with basic weapons. Wolfguard bikers can take a large variety of weapons. Convert either out of a space marine biker box with bits from spacewolf infantry sprue that came in your start collecting box.

This edition I tend to play mostly elite lists. I love wulfen and Wolfguard bikers. I'm not impressed with our troops right now. Although I'd like to get bloodclaws on the hunt to make a charge just once within 12" of my wulfen.

Here is an example of the kind of list I think is fun. I play a lot of 1k tournaments.

Yeah, the lone wolf I made by modding the second wolf Lord since the first didn't really inspire me when I read up on him. My lone wolf looks much cooler heh.

Your list looks very fast at first glance. It might be fun to try something like that too. I do like the bike models and conversions are always an entertaining distraction.
