I'm afraid I can't fully answer that question. They are certainly a more general release - however, the print minimums may mean that only one printing is ever deemed worthwhile.

From someone interested in getting into this, does this book contain all the base rules as well? Or should I go buy the first book first and then get this one?

I hav ebeen underwhlemed by some of the supplements, but this one seems like I should get it.

I am very interested to see how much of Ghost Archipelago's rules filter into Frostgrave now?

Just get the main rulebook. Everything else, including this, is optional.

As a counterpoint to Joe, i'd actually say the opposite. IF you don't mind buying digital Kindle editions, you can get the books very affordably, and Frostgrave is very much a game which gets better and better the more options you have. Considering it is miniatures agnostic, I can happily tell people dropping $75 on all the rules, still a fraction of most modern big-box boardgames, will get you months and months of entertainment.

Anyone with experience with this mind a few questions? This is a skirmish game of people vs people but there is also an option of people vs the game with rules for it to play itself?

Sort of. One of the supplements (Tomb of the Lich??) has a three-scenario solo / coop campaign. Also, random monsters usually go after the closest player in LOS, so you can just generate monsters instead of having an opponent. And you can create warbands without wizards, as opponents.
